Festus, Missouri is a small town in the Ozarks of eastern Arkansas. It is located on the east bank of the Little Rock River, about halfway between Little Rock and Fort Smith. The population was 1,971 at the 2010 census. Festus began as a log cabin settlement in 1836 by two families of trappers who had been sent out from nearby Bentonville by General Andrew Johnson to survey and explore new territory in what is now Arkansas. Their logs were used to build the first frame house in Festus, which was dedicated in 1841. The following year, settlers brought over a team of oxen to help with heavy planting work around the stockade that they had built. By 1845, there were nine families living in Festus; all but one were permanent residents. The town grew rapidly during the 1850s as men took advantage of new land grants set aside for farmers along the riverbanks north of Festus. In 1858, voters approved a charter for the first high school in Arkansas; it opened three years later on January 1, 1860. That same year saw an important event when Union Major General James Kuykendall arrived at Festus with troops to suppress a slave insurrection within Confederate-held Arkansas. After finding no significant resistance from local citizens he ordered his soldiers to leave without taking any prisoners or destroying any property before turning back towards Little Rock for dinner). Festus, Missouri is a small town in Johnson County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,362 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield metropolitan area. Festus was founded by German immigrants in 1837 and named for Saint Festinus. The first post office was established in 1839. In 1849, the town plat was filed and Festus became a village. On July 4, 1898, Festus incorporated as a city with a population of 897. On November 3, 1902 Mayor Waley died suddenly after being hit by a car while walking to his house from work; four days later the city charter was amended to make Festus an independent city with unicameral government under mayor-council jurisdiction. The primary industry until recently has been agriculture with feedlots available for cattle and hogs; however some small businesses have developed around services such as plumbing and home improvement products. There are also several industries that are based in or use parts of town including: manufacturing (steel fabrication; aircraft parts), health care (medical equipment sales), trucking (manufacturing materials handling), retail (stores selling items such as hardware and appliances) and telecommunications (internet service). Festus is located on I-435 near Interstate 70 east of Springfield which provides access to all types of transportation within Johnson County as well as other nearby counties including Douglas County to the north and more than 50 miles west to Kansas City across the state line. Frequent tornado outbreaks and tornadoes have been a part of the history of Festus, Missouri since it was settled in 1836. The town was established on the east bank of the Arkansas River, near present-day Springfield. It was named for General Festus Keyes, who led an expedition against Native Americans in 1813. The first Tornado Outbreak took place on November 20th, 1837 when an EF3 tornado struck the community. A total of nine people were killed and dozens injured in this outbreak. On May 2nd, 1840, another EF3 tornado struck the community; however only one person was killed and five injured as a result. On October 26th, 1861, a C4 tornado struck Festus killing twelve people and injuring many more. This tornado is still considered one of the deadliesttornadoes to hit Missouri during that time period. In 1936, F5 Tornados ripped through town damaging almost all buildings within its boundaries; however no one died as a result.
