The town was founded in 1868 by John Fenton and named for Festus, a Roman general who fought against the Persians. In 1956, Festus was also the site of an annual livestock show and rodeo which continues to this day. For over ninety years, Festus has been home to the Stroudsburg Junior High School football team. As one of only three high schools in Jefferson County to offer both football and baseball (the others being Ironton and Republic), the school's tradition of winning has continued uninterruptedly since 1938. In 1984, the school changed their name to "Festival" in memory of then-athletic director Forrest Stroud. Today, Festival remains one of only a few high schools inJefferson County that offers wrestling as well as other sports. Festus was a small town in northeastern Missouri, United States. It was located on the banks of the Kanawha River and on the gently rolling hills of eastern Randolph County. The town had a population of about 350 in 1892, when it was burned by Confederate forces during the American Civil War. Born in 1790, Festus was one of 12 children born to Nicholas and Elisabeth (Fenton) Festus. His father died when Festus was only six years old, leaving his mother to care for him and his five siblings. At the age of 15, Festus began working in a sawmill near his home to support the family. In 1815, he married Jane Browning; they had two daughters and three sons before she died in 1835. In 1825, after attending an agricultural fair at Phila., Pennsylvania,Festus returned home to start a farmstead with some land he had bought from John Woodford two years earlier. He continued farming until his death in 1865; his wife also ran a farm until her death in 1850. After their deaths, their four surviving children divided their father's estate between them: James inherited most of what remained on the farmstead; Lewis received title to about 640 acres along the Kanawha River north of town; Alfred got title to another 160 acres east of town; and Daniel got title to about 100 acres withinFestus limits east of town. In 1897–98, local citizens organized an annual festival known as "The Fest". The event attracted around 50 people from throughout Randolph County each year who came together for music and dance performances by local amateur groups as well as picnics and refreshments outdoors. In recent years, The Fest has become more centered around educational programming such as history lectures by local historian Drs.. Treadwell-Collins and Whitebotham followed by exhibits on various aspects of early rural life within festustowne
