The Coast Guard has been providing emergency services to the people of Festus, Missouri since 1914. The Coast Guard is a branch of the United States military and its mission is to promote public safety by protecting maritime interests and coastline. In 1915, the Coast Guard appointed a detachment to provide emergency services along the Missouri River. This detachment was responsible for rescuing stranded passengers and cargo as well as providing law enforcement and fire protection on the river. In 1926, a new detachment was stationed in Festus and this time it was responsible for providing security for both the town's commercial docks and its adjacent beaches. The Coast Guard also began providing service within schools in Festus during this time. In 1969, an additional detachment was established in St Louis County in order to take care of needs within that area as well as respond to requests from local police departments throughout Missouri. The Service now operates three detachments located in St Louis County: one stationed at Forest Park; one at Bellefontaine; and one at Florissant Heights. Since its establishment, the Coast Guard has played an important role within the community of Festus. It has provided assistance with tasks such as Search and Rescue operations, response to natural disasters like hurricanes or tornadoes, disaster preparedness exercises, and more. Additionally, through their relationship with local businesses,the Service has been able to help improve local infrastructure including repairs to roofs, installation of storm drains, improved lighting systems, etc.. Festus is a town in St. Francois County, Missouri, United States. The population was 4,811 at the 2010 census. Festival Park is located in Festus and offers a variety of activities for children and adults including soccer, baseball, softball, basketball, track and field, water balloon tosses, food booths and more. The park also has an amphitheater that can seat up to 1,500 people. The town was founded on July 20th 1867 by John J. McClendon and his family as a farming community named "Mt. Vernon". The first post office was established in Festus on September 11th 1870 by Henery Capps with the name "Mt. Vernon." In 1872 when the U.S. Telegraph Company came to Festus to build a line from Springfield to Decatur they bought all of the land around present-day Festus for $1 per acre. On October 17th 1872 John McClendon built the first store in what is now Festival Park which became known as "Old Town" because it housed all of the town's businesses before it was annexed into Festus in 1898. In 1896 when Congress passed the Homestead Act farmsteads were organized into townships so that each township had its own government but Old Town continued until 1903 when it became part of St Francois County under the jurisdiction of Summit Township.. In 1907 Summit Township merged with Plattsmouth Township creating what is now Festus Township.. In 1912 Old Town was again annexed into Festus while new buildings were erected here such as schoolhouses and churches.. By 1920 there were only four homes left standing in festus after most of the residents had moved away or been absorbed into other townships nearby.. When St Francois County formed following World War II most residents returned to live within their original townships though some still maintain farms withinfestUS village boundaries today

In 1831, Festus was a small town in the county of St. Francois in the state of Missouri. It had a population of about fifty people. It was located on the east bank of the river Mississippi about two miles north of present-day Kansas City and about one mile south of modern-day Springfield. Festival County was organized in 1837 from parts of Clay, Crawford, and Vernon counties. In 1854, it became part of Calloway County. The first post office at Festus was established in 1836. The first store at Festus was conducted by Elisha Dowling. A Methodist Church building was erected in 1840 and used until 1865. A school building and parsonage were built between 1840 and 1845; both are still standing.
