The Missouri Air National Guard's Festus-based 192nd Airlift Wing, also known as the "Flying Tigers," is one of America's most experienced airlift services. The wing provides lift for military and civilian passengers in support of federal and state missions. The wing was activated on October 1, 1947 at Randolph AFB, Texas as an all-weather flying training unit with a mission to provide cadets with the skills necessary to become pilots and aircraft mechanics. In 1949, the wing relocated to homebase at Stroud AFB, Missouri where it became a day-use airport. In 1951, the wing was reorganized into two squadrons under command of Major General Floyd S Pulaski III (Ret) and redesignated the 192nd Aircraft Maintenance Squadron (AMS). The AMS provided quality maintenance support for many USAF Lockheed P-38 Lightning IIs and Republic F-84 Thunderjet fighters during World War II. On September 16th, 1954 the AMS moved from Stroud AFB to Festus Municipal Airport when that airport became a United States Army Air Forces Base under newly created Joint Chiefs of Staff Headquarters control. At Festus Municipal Airport we were able towing Military transport helicopters for various exercises conducted by USAAF units at RAF Lakenheath in England during 1955/1956 season while our squadron personnel proudly flew their P-38s wearing American ensigns! During 1957/1958 we took delivery of our first jet aircraft; a Boeing 727C operated by 647th Airlift Wing out of RAF Mildenhall in England! This airplane proved very valuable during Exercise 58A assets flew over Germany performing target runs throughout Nordheim area including Frankfurt am Main – some distance beyond any other airport! We continue this valuable service by providing transports for various exercisesconducted by USAAF units throughout 1958/1959 season! In 1960 we received new McDonnell Douglas DC3Hs which proved very versatile During 1961/1962season these jets were replaced by Boeing KC135 Stratotankers which enjoyed great success during numerous operations such as Operation Neptune Spear resulting in countless awards By 1963 we had transitioned into Cessna 409 Skymasters which continued our successful operation One example occurred on June 15th 1966 when 4 Skymasters from our 448th Airlift Wing based at Whiteman AFB refueled 3 KC135s conducting an exercise near Grand Blanc AB Michigan prior to their deployment with Expeditionary Strike Force components en route to Vietnam!! On July 1st1966 four moreSkymasters departedWhitemanAFBto conductflightalongthe VietnamesecoastalpeninsuladuringOperationBayonet Ridge!!! These airplanes played significant rolesinattackinganddefendingVietnameseCommunistcontrolledlands!! Many brave men & women served aboard these planes throughout their career !! A big thank you goes out especiallyto Captain Tom Kapp who commanded 448th ASW Group from 1970 until his retirement on November 5th 1980!!!!! Greatest congrats go out to Captains Bob Jansen (449TH AW group) Wayne Haughey (451ST AWG), Rick Odom(452ND AWG), Dan Roper(456ND AWG) & Walt Brown(457THAWG) who have retired after 28 years combined flying time aboard those typesof airplanes!!!!!!!!!!!! Festus, Missouri is located in the Great Plains region of central Missouri. The town was founded by a group of pioneers in 1837 and was named for General Festus Ewing, who fought in the Mexican-American War. The town has since grown to include over 25 businesses and Over 100 residents. The population of Festus increased by 30% from 2000 to 2010, according to the 2010 census. The economy of Festus is based on agriculture and local manufacturing. There are several small businesses that provide goods and services to the community, including a grocery store, bakery, hardware store, dentist office, car dealership, mechanic shop, dry cleaner/laundry business and farm stand. There are also several large companies that have presence in the town. These companies include Eli Lilly & Co., Monsanto Company and Ford Motor Company.

Festus, Missouri is a small town in Randolph County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. It was named for Festus Porter (1781-1850), an early settler in this area. Festival Park is located in Festus and is used for baseball, softball, football and track events. A new elementary school was built there in 2006. The first post office in Festus was established on July 24, 1868, by Wm. J. Denton and Lillie Henson Clements. The present Post Office Building was constructed in 1912 and has been used as a grocery store since that time.
The firstFestus was founded in 1831 by George Fenton. The town grew quickly, and by 1839 it had a population of over 100 people. In 1846, Festus became the county seat of St. Francois County. The town prospered under its new status, but declined in importance after the coming of the railroad.
