The history of the Navy in Ferguson, Missouri dates back to 1851. The first navy unit to be stationed in Ferguson was the U.S. Coast Guard Station at Fort Donelson, which served as a depot for merchant ships and also acted as a naval base during World War II. In 1964, the Naval Air Station at Springfield was activated and became home to the Marine Aircraft Wing 131 (MAW-131). The station was closed in 1996 but it is now open as an exhibit called "The History of Naval Aviation in Missouri." In 1999, USS Enterprise (CVN-74) arrived at Naval Air Station Springfield from San Diego and assumed responsibility for providing aviation services at MAW-131. Enterprise remained here until she decommissioned on October 14, 2003. She has been moved several times due to her location on two different military bases: first to Naval Air Station Jacksonville before being moved again to Springfield; then finally she retired at Springfield on July 1, 2006 after more than 50 years of service. It is located on the western bank of the Arkansas River, about 30 miles north of St. Louis and about 25 miles south of Kansas City. In early years most people worked on farms or made their living by fishing and hunting; later entrepreneurs such as Amish farmers created industries such as textiles and shoe manufacturens which grew into large businesses during the late 19th century. In recent decades however, due to suburban growth around town and lack of available land for farming/manufacturing/related businesses (most notably a major oil refinery), there has been significant decline in manufacturing jobs throughout much of Ferguson's core area since 2000. Mining had until recently been an important industry with local employment levels reaching into the thousands; however this activity has largely stopped because of pollution concerns brought about by nearby refining operations along I-55 and other highways within commuting distance of town center (although exploration for new mines continues).

However, due to racial tensions that had been building up throughout much of America during this time period, violence broke out between whites and blacks beginning in earnest within Ferguson around 1960. This led to widespread riots which left many innocent people dead or wounded – including six-year-old Michael Brown Jr., who was shot by officer Darren Wilson after being situated on Ocean Drive near where Brown lived). As a result of these events, Ferguson eventually seceded from Missouri into Oklahoma Territory following the state's admission into that country in 1865.

Reconstruction led to increased violence and race riots in Ferguson beginning in1871; these ended with federal intervention and harsh prosecutions resulting in many convictions and public shaming of perpetrators
