Ferguson, Missouri is a city in St. Louis County, Missouri, United States. The population was 66,912 at the 2010 census. Ferguson is one of eight municipalities in St. Louis County and is part of the Greater St. Louis Area Council of Governments. The history of Ferguson goes back to 1837 when a group of Mormons from Nauvoo settled on the east bank of the River Chariton close to where downtown now stands. A post office called "Ferguson" was established in 1838 and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1911. The settlement grew rapidly due to its location and access to water resources which made it an ideal place for cotton plantations operated by slaveowners. In 1846, three brothers founded the town of Ferguson on land that they had purchased from a farmer named James Fordyce near what is now Olivette Avenue and Florissant Road. The town quickly became an important commercial center with businesses including a millinery store, saddlery shop, gristmill, woolen factory, sawmill and farmacia all located within walking distance of each other. Ferguson, Missouri was a community in the St. Louis area that was burned down on Aug. 9, 1881 by forces of the Confederate States of America during the American Civil War. The community had been founded in 1837 by white settlers and was located near what is now downtown St. Louis. The burning of Ferguson also served as a rallying cry for Confederate forces throughout the war.
