From the time that Ferguson, Missouri was founded in 1821 until today, the Ferguson National Guard has been a vital part of the community. The National Guard has played an important role in many different aspects of Ferguson’s history, from providing support during World War II to currently assisting with law enforcement and emergency response efforts. The Ferguson National Guard is one of the oldest national guard units in the United States. It was organized on November 10, 1821 as a regiment of infantry under the command of Major General James Wilkinson. The unit grew quickly and by 1828 it had become an artillery regiment under Major General John Cranch. In 1830, Colonel William Buell took command of the regiment and made it its permanent headquarters. The brigade became an infantry brigade on October 1, 1861 under Colonel George Armstrong Custer andgrade to divisional status on July 15th, 1862. On October 14th, 1865, after Confederate forces surrendered at Appomattox Court House, all divisions within Brigade Custer were disbanded and placed into Union control as part of XXIII Corps cavalry division instead. In 1951-1952 when rioting occurred following passage of two state ballot measures which increased election taxes ( Measure AA ), Governor Michael Dukakis called for troops from Illinois to be sent to Ferguson to help quelch violence. After years of planning Dukakis finally ordered 2 battalions (the 3rd Battalion was activated for duty on March 11th) from Camp Arvin southward through St Louis County towards downtown Ferguson On August 9th 1968 three black soldiers were killed while serving with Company K/1st Battalion 21st Infantry Regiment while patrolling a street near US Highway 44 just north of town limits; this led to heavy protests throughout much of St Louis County culminating in a weekly march down US Highway 44 past Camp Arvin until they reached downtown on Sunday nightAugust 16th1968 where they burned cars gathered there since early Monday morning August 15th 1968; this culminated in what became known as "Ferguson Night" This action eventually led to Lieutenant Governor Vernon Jordan becoming Director Of Public Safety Ferguson's first officer was Captain Charles Weems who manned Fort Donelson Barracks along with other officers appointed by Brigadier General Augustus Wainwright commanderof Militia District No 4 till September 1762 when he succeeded him as Commandant . The first Europeans to visit the area were French traders and missionaries who founded a small town named Fayetteville on the east side of what is now Ferguson in 1763. The town was abandoned after French forces burned it down in 1814 during their invasion of America. A small community named Indianola developed about two miles north of Ferguson on the west side of the river that flows through town. Grant's victorious march through Missouri during the American Civil War ended with Union victory over Confederate forces at Appomattox Court House on April 9, 1865, all but five thousand Confederate troops were ordered from Kansas into Texas where they were eventually welcomed as liberators by many Cornish people living along Texas' border. The history of race relations between African Americans and whites throughout most of this time period can be summarized as follows:
- Pre-Civil Rights Era: White supremacists protested against any form Black participation in public life or contact with whites outside their own social circles; Blacks worked primarily inside white households as domestic servants or manual labor

The original population of Ferguson numbered only 350 people; however, it grew rapidly due to the influx of settlers and the development of nearby industries such as cotton plantations and flour mills. In 1870, white supremacists attacked black residents of Ferguson with gunfire and Molotov cocktails. Five black men were killed and dozens wounded in what is now known as "The Race Riot." The violence led to increased racial tension in Ferguson and eventually led to the formation of the Black Panthers Organization in 1969.
