There is no doubt that Ferguson, Missouri has some of the best coffee in the United States. The city was founded by a group of farmers in the early 1800s and has been home to coffee roasters for over 100 years. Many of the oldest and most well-known coffee roasters in Ferguson include Peet's Coffee, Dutch Bros., and John Deere. Ferguson's coffee history can be traced back to 1868 when two German immigrants, Johann Friedrich Schlegel and Wilhelm Kapp opened a small grocery store on Second Street in Ferguson. Over time, they began importing different types of beans from Europe and selling them across the United States. In 1909, they became the first local roaster to sell ground coffee directly to consumers. By 1920, they had expanded their business into what is now known as Peet's Coffee Company. In 1951, Danish immigrant Ole Kirk Christiansen joined Peet's Coffee Company as its president. He was instrumental in developing the company into one of the leading American roasters today. Under his guidance, Peet's Coffee continued to grow rapidly both within America and internationally; it now operates more than 60 locations worldwide including 14 in North America! In 1984, Ole Kirk Christiansen passed away at age 91 after an illustrious career at Peet's Coffee Company that included serving as President (1979-1984), CEO (1983-1989), Secretary/Treasurer (1981-1984), Chairman/CEO (1977-1981), Vice Chairman/President (1974-1977) and General Manager for North America (1973-1978). During his tenure at Peet's Coffee Company, he helped develop many iconic products such as their famous Pfeffer Bock Beer which is currently enjoyed by millions around the world!

The town is located on the north side of Ferguson Heights, just east of I-270 and west of US 61/64 (the "Highways" that run through much of St. Louis County). By 1915," according to Streeter, "Ferguson had become home to some 3500 residents...and employed 1500 workers...the largest concentration found anywhere within two miles radius.'" In addition to its role as an important center for industry and commerce during this time period - which helped make it one of the richest towns in southern St.Louis County - Ferguson also boasted some excellent schools:According to historian Don Streeter:"Classrooms at both public school buildings [in downtown] accommodated 30 students each; private academies operated separately for boys (1890) or girls (1905)...No low schools existed until after World War II."
