After Jackson's death in 1892, control of Ferguson passed to his two black grandchildren- Thomas Jefferson Davis and Franklin D'Etheredge- but it remained an all-white town until 1967 when the city council began to desegregate its citizens with some exceptions made for African Americans working within certain industries or businesses such as Chevrolet dealerships or tax assessors office. In 1978 public protests against this segregation led to riots that lasted four days which left eighteen people dead and hundreds injured; aftermath King George Washington Carver Elementary School was burned down during curfew night hours In 2000 white supremacist David Lane killed three black men protesting police brutality near Tiger Stadium before taking his own life; following Lane's death several thousand whites rioted throughout neighborhoods adjacent to downtown Saint Louis suburbs
