Ferguson, Missouri is a city in St. Louis County, Missouri, United States. The population was 621 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Saint Louis metropolitan area. Ferguson was named for Captain Francis Ferguson, who fought in the War of 1812 and was elected as a Democrat to the U.S. Senate from Missouri in 1829. Ferguson was founded by Michael Reese on a tract of land that he purchased near present-day City Heights neighborhood in 1837. In 1871, when Ferguson became an incorporated municipality, it had a total population of 1,816; by 1920 it had increased to 3,421.[1] The post office at Ferguson opened on November 12, 1837,[2] and remained open until it closed on February 14, 1922.[3] A community hall and playground were built in 1903 and were destroyed during World War II; they have since been replaced by a high school and park which are located just east of downtown on Belmont Street between Vandeventer Avenue and East Florissant Avenue[4]. The city's first newspaper was The Courier (founded December 8th 1840).[5] It continued publication until January 15th 1861,[6][7][8][9][10][11] when it merged with The Republican to form the Daily Democratic Herald (DHH). In 1865 DHH changed its name to The Tribune after purchasing the Daily Republican's parent paper Union News Agency (UNA) from John Cushing Meredith alias "The Ragged Banner".[12] On September 22nd 1897 both papers merged into one with new titles The Sun-Times (TSN) Since then all other newspapers have used either TSN or simply "T" for Ferguson depending on their affiliation

During this time period, numerous African American professionals started moving into Ferguson as part of an effort to gain better jobs opportunities outside of slavery while also creating their own cultural enclaves within the black community themselves. This progressivism was eventually rolled back during Reconstruction era due largely to law enforcement efforts by white supremacists – although some key African American leaders helped contribute towards restoring justice after Reconstruction ended effectively disenfranchising most blacks across America once again (this process is still ongoing today). In recent years, there have been multiple protests against police brutality within Ferguson – which have occasionally turned violent as protesters attemptTo remove officers from their posts or confront them when they don't comply with orders from authorities (although these incidents have generally ended without serious consequences for either side).
