It is the county seat of St. Louis County and home to the University of Missouri–Ferguson campus. Ferguson was named for General Robert E. Ferguson, an American general during World War I who served in France and was decorated with the Distinguished Service Cross and two Silver Stars for heroism. The first settlers in what would become Ferguson were three families from Illinois: Jameson, Fitzpatrick, and Cousins (the family name had not yet been given to residents). They arrived on November 3, 1837 and built a log cabin on what is now Pritchard Road just east of Third Street. On October 5 of that year they harvested wild corn which they cooked over an open fire before eating it raw. The first post office in Ferguson was established on December 9th, 1837 by John Fitzpatrick with Simeon Sager serving as his clerk. It remained in operation until 1865 when it moved to Prospect Heights where it remained until 1918 when it relocated back to its original location on Third Street near Pritchard Road.
