Farmington, Missouri is a small town in the Ozarks region of central Missouri. The population was 7,826 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield-area. The first permanent settler in Farmington was Levi Coffin in 1819. He and his wife, Rebecca, raised six children on a farm they purchased near the present day intersection of I-70 and US Hwy 63. Farming became an important part of their lives, and Coffin served as Sheriff from 1837 to 1840 and as County Treasurer from 1850 to 1857. In 1851, Farmington voters approved a new state constitution that granted voting rights to all male citizens over 21 years old who owned property in one of the state's 62 counties. This opened up much opportunity for Farmington residents, who had hitherto voted only for local officials and school board members. In 1870, John Wickersham became the first man to be elected Mayor of Farmington after being elected by popular vote; he served two terms (1871-1873). During World War II, many farmers took up arms against Nazi Germany and joined the United States Armed Forces; some were even forced into slave labor camps during the war. Many individual farms also contributed food supplies to area military units; examples include Robert Vinson's 350 acres (160 hectares)of corn seed production which fed feed troops in Normandy during Operation Overlord After World War II ended, many farmers returned to their farming ways but some continued to produce crops such as soybeans until 1973 when they were replaced by corn producer Monsanto Company. In recent decades there has been significant development around entertainment venues like The theater atCommerce City Mall which opened in 2006 along with several other bars/restaurants within walking distance including a fast food restaurant called Burger King that relocated from nearby Jacksonville Landing mall three years earlier which closed its doors.; further development is planned for School District No. 5157 known as "Farmington Hills" with plans for an elementary school opening in 2020 adjacent to Gateway Mall while another high school will open followed by an adult education center later this decade
