Farmington, Mo., is a town in the U.S. state of Missouri and the county seat of Buchanan County. The population was 3,441 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Kansas City metropolitan area. The Town of Farmington was founded in 1833 by men from New England who came to this area to grow corn and other crops for export to Great Britain. The first post office was established in 1835. The town's name comes from the English word "farm" which means "a piece of land used for growing crops." In 1864, Farmington became a city when it was annexed by Lawrence, Kans., and its boundaries were widened to include portions of Buchanan County. In 1907, Farmington merged with nearby Anadarko and formed the new city-county government known as Anadarko-Farmington City Council District No. 2 (later renamed Anadarko-Central City Council District No. 4). On July 1, 1957, the two cities joined together to form what is now called Farmington-Anadarko Municipal Authority (FAMA). On May 17, 1840, a group of men under Captains John Cushman and David Fenton chartered the Northwest Missouri River ferry company "John Cushman's Ferry". This ferry service transported goods between Farmington on the north side of Missouri River and Anadarko on the south side until 1849 when steamboats took over operation due to navigation difficulties caused by changes in river water levels brought about by developments upstream including dam building projects that began in early 19th century Wichita Falls, Texas
