Farmington, Missouri is a small town in the Ozarks region of Missouri, United States. The population was 1,591 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield-Joplin-Anderson metropolitan area. Farmington has been identified as one of the "Top 10 places to live in America" by Forbes magazine and "The Best Place to Raise Kids In America" by The Washington Post. In 1831, Farmington activists started a school for African Americans in what is now known as Old Negro Cemetery. On October 15, 1836, General James Hogg led an attack on Fort Osage at nearby Gentryville that resulted in the death of about 20 enslaved Africans who were being held there by Indians. This event marked the beginning of white settlement in this area and ending any previous African slave trade from this region. Farmington's first store was built on Main Street in 1852 by Elisha Dickinson and his brother-in-law Samuel Loomis. A post office was established at Farmington in 1865, and remained open until it closed on March 13, 1913. A new courthouse was built on State Route 3 near Mount Carmel during 1907–1908 Heurich Brothers architects designed it with Romanesque Revival features including a tower that rises 153 feet (47 m). The building served as both a court house and jail before it finally burned down in 1951. In 1929 Fenton Christensen donated land to make way for Interstate 55 which arrived through Farmington six years later when Govan Construction Company added two lanes between Springfield and Joplin along State Route 3B which became I-55 Folkestone Road today. At that time Farmington also became one of only a few towns within reach of I-55 traffic while still clinging to its sleepy charms despite becoming one of Highway 51's most populous communities over the next several decades with an estimated population growth rate above 7% per year until declining below 5% around 2000 due largely to highway construction projects adjacent to town limits concurrent with overall rural facePeak population: 2010: 1,591
