Farmington, Missouri is a small town in central Missouri, United States. The population was 1,470 at the 2010 census. It is part of the St. Louis metropolitan area. The first European settlers in Farmington were Frenchmen who arrived around 1764 and built a trading post on the east side of the creek that flows through town. The name "Farmington" was given to the place by Captain Pierre Laclède and his men when they visited this site during their exploration of central Missouri in 1768-1769. The first courthouse and jail were built in 1810. The first school was organized in 1811. A cotton gin was erected about 1840 and became known as the "Bank House." In 1851, a post office called "Farmington" was established; it continued to be used until after World War II when it was renamed "St. Joseph." In 1862, Union General Philip Sheridan moved his army from Springfield through Farmington on their march toward Bowling Green across the state line into Kentucky under cover of darkness while Confederate General Robert Ewell watched from his plantation south of town. When Sheridan's forces reached Farmington early morning on November 7th, they destroyed all but one house before entering town square for breakfast with General Ulysses S Grant nearby reviewing them from atop Mount Zion Cemetery northeast of town near where he would later die fighting against Sherman's forces at Mine Run Bridgehead four days later on November 11th. No houses remain standing in or around downtown FarmINGTON today due to fire damage caused by Hurricane Katrina which hit StLouis on September 29th 2005
