Farmington, Missouri is a small town in the Ozarks region of Missouri. The population was 2,906 at the 2010 census. It is part of the St. Louis metropolitan area and is situated on the south bank of the Arkansas River within north-central Missouri. The Town of Farmington was laid out in 1837 by Major John Smith and named after him. The first store was built on Main Street in 1838, and the first post office was established in 1840. In 1851, Fayetteville (now Neosho) County was formed from parts of Westmoreland County and Farmington became a part of that county. The population increased rapidly during the late 19th century due to immigration from Hungary, Czechoslovakia, Russia, Germany, Italy and other parts of Europe; however World War I halted this growth as many immigrants returned home before hostilities began. In 1925, major changes were made to Farmington's government when it became an election precinct for St. Louis County; this change led to its current name which consists of two words - "Farmington" - as well as its current slogan - "Our Town You Can Trust." At present, Farmington has a total land area comprising 283 acres (130 hectares). Until about 1900 or so there were no schools in Farmington; all children went to school with their families outside the town limits until about 1920 when a school building was erected on Court Avenue near where present day Elmwood Park Shopping Center stands today. That building served as both School District #1's elementary school and High School until it closed in 1975 and then been turned into an apartment complex called 'The Manor'. A new high school opened in Fall 1996 on US Highway 36 just east of Elmwood Park Shopping Center which serves students from neighboring towns including Ferguson Heights (west side), White Sands (east side), Maple Bluff (north side), Shopkins Landing (south side) and Greenbelt Heights (west side). Kirkpatrick Elementary School is located just northeast of Downtown while Northwest Elementary School located off North State Road 417 next door to Barnes & Noble bookstore offers PreK-8th grade education while South MiddleSchool offers 9th-12th grade education with several buildings being used for various purposes such as music classrooms/ rehearse spaces/recreational areas etc.. Farmerstown MiddleSchool serving grades 5-8 also exists but does not offer programs specific to that age group like Kirkpatrick does

The first post office was established in Farmington on October 1, 1837. During the American Civil War, Farmington was engaged in a close battle with nearby Hannibal In 1865, Farmington became the seat of government for Benton County. The town experienced rapid growth after it incorporated as a city in 1888. In 1923, FarmINGTON repealed its incorporation ordinance due to opposition from some residents who felt that incorporation would have led to higher taxes and less autonomy for their community. After years of decline, efforts by City Manager Donahue to revive the city failed in 1975. However, following an investment from entrepreneur Rick Meeks, In 1984-1985 Mayor George Treadwell led an effort to reopen the city hall and create new amenities for the citizens of Farmington including a library/theater complex and new parks within walking distance of downtown. In 1995-1996 Mayor Tom Wilkinson led an effort to make changes to zoning laws which allowed for more density within the town limits which helped spur economic development within what had been considered an agricultural economy before that time
Farmington, Missouri was founded in 1836 by Solomon Northrup. The town was named after Farmington, New York. Northrup built the first store in the town and started a farm. The first post office in Farmington opened in 1837. In 1865, Farmington became a city and was renamed to Springfield.
