The Farmington Air Force Base is one of the main military installations in Missouri. It was founded in 1941 as a small air force base and has since grown to become one of the most important USAF bases in the country. Farmington, Missouri is a small town located in the Ozarks region of north-central Missouri. The population was 8,890 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield, MO–Jefferson County micropolitan area. The first inhabitants of Farmington were the Anasazi and Pawnee peoples. They arrived in what is now Farmington about 1800 BC. The early settlers were white men from Kentucky and Virginia who came to discover a land that they thought would be worthless because it was too far from any other settlements. Of the original settlers only a few remain today: George Wightman, his son John Wightman, Samuel Butler and their families; Landon Sayers;and two brothers—Avery and Orville Sayers—who became restaurateurs in Springfield before moving to Farmington in 1929. The first post office at Farmington was established on July 1, 1829. As time passed more people moved into the community and by 1840 there were over 100 residents living in farmsteads scattered around what is now central and east side of town. By 1851, when Jesse James robbed the Hudson's Bay Company store at Central City during his raid across Missouri known as The Great Train Robbery, most of what is now central city had been developed as farms with several hundred residents already living thereabouts. Like many other small towns throughout America during this period, Farmington experienced rapid growth due to railroads coming through town looking for new markets for their products after being tapped by Kansas City for its growing population center following the arrival of the Union Pacific Railroad in 1865 (see also "Kansas City & Johnson County history"). The industry that drove this growth included cotton farming with plantations throughout much of Arkansas until 1870 when it was replaced by corn production; but apart from some brief periods during World War I (1914–18) when local industries produced military supplies needed by our troops stationed abroad (eagle feathers etc.), nothing else significant occurred until after World War II when heavy industry began arriving followed by large-scale migration inland seeking employment opportunities (in particular within Illinois). After decades of steady decline due primarily to factors such as technological advances leading to increased productivity on larger farms which outcompete smaller ones along with shifts away from agricultural production toward service businesses such as health care, meatpacking plants etc., Farmington experienced an extensive revival beginning around 1990 characterized especially by downtown renovation projects including many high-end properties becoming available for sale or rent while also attracting music venues (such as Gourd Neck Amphitheatre), restaurants/bars/cafeterias/clothing stores etc., making it one of America’s fastest-growing “Midwestern” cities since 2000 according to Forbes Magazine Farmington has always been heavily dependent upon agriculture although progress has been made towards electric lighting started here back then too late? No one really knows...There are numerous stories associated with this place like how two friends named Isaac Montgomery and Elijah Taylor founded a grocery store called The Gourd Neck Store together back in 1830 This store lasted until 1886 When Montgomery died suddenly young he left all his business assets behind His widow flooded THE GOURD NECK STORE WITH CLOTHING AND GOODS HER husband had stored up so she could keep everything! Now every time you go into town you see something new! A very interesting story indeed!
Farmington, Missouri is located in the United States. As of the 2010 census, the population was 5,702. The town was founded in 1836 by General John A. Fremont and his wife, Catharine Beecher Fremont. The first post office was established in Farmington on December 12, 1837. It was renamed Rockville in 1848 after von Rockenfels House (now known as Rockville Center), a mansion built by George Washington Carver on a tract of land that he donated to the town for development. The first store in Farmington opened on January 1, 1840, and remained open until December 6, 1851 when it burned down. The first hotel opened on October 15, 1850 and remains open today as Hotel du Lac. In 1861-1862 the Union Pacific Railroad constructed a line from St Louis to Farmington which changed the name of the town toRockville City. In 1865-1866 two local men named John Sutter and William Fenton developed what is now Sacramento County while they were working for General Riley Hill near Joplin, Missouri; this led to their laterbecoming famous for founding Sacramento County Agricultural Experiment Station (later Calico Hills Farms). On July 14th 1896 there was a tornado outbreak over central Missouri killing one person and causing extensive damage including destruction of barns and homes; this event is generally considered one of the most devastating Tornadoes in history
