Excelsior Springs, Mo., is a small town located in the Ozarks region of northwest Missouri. The population was 4,711 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat for and largest city in Polk County. The first coffee beans were grown and roasted by two men who lived in Excelsior Springs during the early 1800s. They called their product "black coffee." In 1892, an Italian-owned grocery store opened in downtown Excelsior Springs and started selling espresso based coffee. In 1912, J.P. Brouillet founded the First National Bank in downtown Excelsior Springs and opened his first café serving espresso-based coffee from his cafe on Main Street. This café became known as "Brouillet's". In 1929, Harry Wexler established the Wexler Coffee Company which became one of the largest roasters of java south of Chicago using whole bean beans from small farmers throughout central Missouri. In 1978, Harry Wexler retired from business operations and passed away at age 94 years old. His son continues to run the company today asHarry Wexler Enterprises Incorporated with headquarters located on State Route 585 outside of Springfield, Mo..

The community was founded in 1858 by George Washington Dixon and his wife Anna Dixon. The name "Excelsior" originates from an Indian word meaning "uppermost." In 1879, the first post office was established in Excelsior Springs. In 1865, General Ulysses S. Grant visited Excelsior Springs to view the start of the Union Pacific Railroad. His visit marked the beginning of a long friendship between Excelsior Springs and Kansas City. In 1870, President Andrew Johnson stopped at Excelsior Springs on his way to Lawrenceburg Junction near St Louis for a speech before he left for Hannibal, Missouri. As one of America’s most prosperous small towns during its early years – with two banks and three general stores – Excelsior Springs quickly became known as “the principal town in Hickory County” because it was located where all important county roads crossed each other; that is, just outside of present-day Research Park (although there were earlier settlements here). Aided by its location on major transportation arteries like I-435 and US-270 (and still today), as well as its strongknit community spirit – fostered by such founder figures as Reverend George W Dixon Sr., Mrs Anna Dixon (later Mrs Harry Truman), Dr John P Ewing (founder/president of Joplin College), Reverend Eugene Henson (founder/director of hospitals in Jackson County) and many more – Excelsion quickly wound down into obscurity following World War II; but slowly began to regain some recognition after experiencing renaissance periods during the 1960’S through 1990’S when new businesses started up including several restaurants & bars along I-435 & US-270; while also seeing growth in both housing prices (& even now you can find many single family homes priced <= $200K); making this once sleepy little corner on I-435 one of America’s most vibrant communities again!

The city experienced a rapid growth during the 1920s and 1930s as many residents fled the Dust Bowl in search of jobs in Chicago or other prosperous locales. However, during World War II, violence and crime rates increased in Excelsior Springs as military men from nearby Kansas City moved into the community to take advantage of its lax laws regarding alcohol and sex. In 1948, Excelsior Springs was annexed by Kansas City; however, it continued to exist as an independent municipality until it merged with neighboring Overland Park in 1984. Today, Excelsior Springs remains one of the most diverse small towns in America with a wide variety of cultural experiences and histories.
