Excelsior Springs is a small town located in St.Charles County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,569 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield-Greene Metropolitan Statistical Area. Excelsior Springs was laid out in 1857 by James A. Buchanan and named for Colonel John Excelsior (1785-1851), an American Revolutionary War veteran and landowner in the area who donated $10,000 to build a school and library in 1859. The name "Excelsior" has been retained by the post office ever since. The first settler in Excelsior Springs was David Witherspoon, who arrived there on July 7, 1857. He built a cabin on what is now North Oliver Street and named it Witherspoon's Grove after his father-in-law, Nathan Webster III (1786-1868). David Witherspoon also raised horses and cattle here until he moved away in 1865 when he became one of the first settlers to form a town charter company with other pioneers within three years of each other – including George Washington Dixon (1812-1881), Isaac Nunn (1800-1873), Elijah Peele (1792-1852) and Solomon Morse (1800-1876). The early days were difficult for many of these pioneers as they had to travel long distances from their homes to carry out operations such as farming or trading goods with nearby cities such as St. Louis or Kansas City because those areas did not yet have postal service or even railroad service! However, through hard work and determination these pioneer families made something of themselves over time – becoming some of the most successful businesses around! This industry growth continued into the 20th century as well; during that time Excelsior Springs experienced rapid growth due largely to its location – being only 10 miles east of St. Charles County’s major commercial center! As demand grew for new housing developments throughout this region, more people started moving into this growing community; indeed, within 30 years it had become one of the most populous towns in Western Missouri! In recent decades however there has been significant decline overall in both population size and business activity; although some properties may still be used for agricultural purposes; overall much of this structure has been replaced by newer buildings which are less likely to be used for traditional farm activities but instead provide services like health care or retail opportunities! Excelsior Springs is a small town in suburban St. Louis County, Missouri, United States. The population was 2,890 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Carbondale-Huntley-Mount Prospect, Illinois Metropolitan Statistical Area. Excelsior Springs was founded in 1868 by James and Catherine Stephenson as the village of Excelsior Springs after they purchased land from a creek that ran through their farmstead. A post office was established in 1870, and the first incorporated society in Excelsior Springs was chartered on February 26, 1872. In 1884, local farmers formed a company to purchase 640 acres (2 km²) of forested land east of town for $600 per acre (1/4 hectare). This land became known as Crystal Lake Township and would later be annexed into St. Louis County in 1896. The Stephenson family continued to operate a grocery store until 1915 when they sold it to Wm. Hickey & Bros.. In 1916, Excelsior Springs voters passed an ordinance establishing fire protection and schools within the limits of the village; these were the first public services provided by Excelsior Springs residents. In 1920, Major General John Jellico donated 4 acres (16 hectares) of his estate near Mount Vernon Heights to become what is now called Jellico Park which features a baseball diamond with a capacity of 10,000 people anda track leading up to it used for horse races and other events during summer months when Mount Vernon Heights was free from heavy crowds...In 1951 Molineux Award winning composer Virgil Thomson settled in St.,Louisville area - he resided at 5463 US Highway 59W then moved his home 4 miles west on Forest Road 5951 where he built "The Best Little Village on Earth" which continues today as " excelsior springs park".
