The National Guard of the United States of America (NGUSA) was first organized on November 3, 1861. The first national guard units were raised in Missouri and Arkansas. In 1867, the National Guard was reorganized into a territorial force and it was that year that Excelsior Springs, Missouri became the first municipality to form a municipal National Guard unit. On May 9th, 1877, the Missouri National Guard Unit #3 was activated at Excelsior Springs by Governor John Chilton to serve as security for the annual Celebration of New Beginnings which took place in town. From its activation until 1933 when it merged with the State Militia of Missouri to become simply the Missouri National Guard, Excelsior Springs played an important role in American history as a militarypost and community center.

Excelsior Springs, Missouri is a small town located in Clinton County, Missouri. The population was 1,912 at the 2010 census. Excelsior Springs is part of the Springfield-Springfield Heights metropolitan area. Excelsior Springs was founded in 1855 on the site of an old fur trading post by John A. Dixon and his family. When it was first surveyed, Excelsior Springs was only 8 miles wide and had a population of just 10 people. However, over time, the community grew and prospered because of its location and access to water resources. Today, Excelsior Springs enjoys a rich cultural heritage with many residents descended from pioneers who settled here in the 1850s. A number of new civic buildings have been erected since 2001 including: The Smith Center for Performing Arts (2001), The Rheinhart-Porter Museum Complex (2002), and Stinson Recreation Center(2003). In recent years there have also been efforts to revive aspects of local agriculture – notably with the erection of a modern barn/seedorfactory complex known as “The Green Belt” that includes 5 acres adjacent to First Presbyterian Church property on South Elm Street (). In addition to its rich cultural heritage, Excelsior Springs has become an important economic center due to its location within easy travel distance both eastward into Springfield Township via Interstate 66 and westward into Clinton County via U.S Route 84 or Interstate 70

Excelsior Springs, also known as Excelsior, is a small town in Howell County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the St. Louis metropolitan area. The name "Excelsior" comes from an Indian word meaning "the best." The town was founded by farmers in 1868 when they moved from Illinois to this area and began to develop agricultural land. In 1872, they built the first store in what is now Excelsior Springs. They were able to do this because they had access to financing through a group of men who organized the first Farmers' Loan Association in America. This helped them build up their business and make money that they could use to buy more land and provide services such as education and health care for their citizens. After World War II ended, many people left Excelsior Springs because of various reasons including the economy being tough after the war; however, others stayed because of friends or family ties here. During this time there were several businesses which lasted for many years such as KFC (later known as Kentucky Fried Chicken), Tyson's Pizza, Smith Barney's department store and Jiffy Lube convenience store all located here until they closed down due to competition or changing times. Additionally, there was a movie theater called The Regal which played movies until it closed down in 1984 after multiple attempts at renovation/upkeep by management only resulted in more problems with noise levels and other deficiencies inside the building- something that still remains unsolved today! Today Excelsior Springs has developed into an interesting community with its own unique history which can be found nowhere else on Earth!
