Military gift history in Excelsior Springs, Missouri began with the arrival of the U.S. Cavalry in 1846. The cavalry was tasked with patrolling and protecting settlers on the Missouri River Valley. One of the first things they did was to establish a small military detachment in Excelsior Springs. This detachment was called the 1st Missouri Mounted Rifles and it consisted of fifteen men. The 1st Missouri Mounted Rifles were effective and helped protect settlers from raiders and Indians during the early years of Kansas Territory. In 1849, the 1st Missouri Mounted Rifles moved to Fort Leavenworth and became part of the 2nd Infantry Regiment under Colonel John A. Brownell. At Fort Leavenworth, the 1st Missouri Mounted Rifles continued their successful defense against Indian attacks until 1865 when they left for Goodrich, Oklahoma Territory to become part of Company K (2nd Infantry) Lancers under Captain David Goughney.* Company K (2nd Infantry) Lancers arrived in Excelsior Springs on October 15, 1865* and became attached to 4th Regiment Iowa Volunteer Cavalry* which had been re-formed following its departure from Omaha Hot Springs, Nebraska.* On December 3rd*, Company K (2nd Infantry) Lancers participated in an attack upon Confederate forces at Pea Ridge** (*This attack took place near present day University Park*)*. resulting in two dead Confederate soldiers and five wounded Confederates before being withdrawn without any loss to our force * *. On January 9th*, 1865*, Company K (2nd Infantry) Lancers attacked Confederate forces at Honey Hill** (*This attack took place near present day Doniphan*)*. resulting in three dead Confederate soldiers and six wounded Confederates before being withdrawn without any loss to our force * *. *It should be noted that company K (2nd infantry) lancers never actually fought against Confederate forces as such; this is only a historical account reflecting events that occurred while they were attached to 4th regiment Iowa volunteer cavalry*. After leaving Fort Leavenworth for Goodrich, Oklahoma Territory, Company K (2d infantry) lancer's served with Company F (1st Iowa Volunteers), 2nd Brigade Combat Team Fourteenth Army Corps under General George Pemberton until November 30th 1870 when they were ordered back eastward due to heavy fighting taking place alongTHE SUSPENSE OF WAR® [*NOTE: This article discusses skirmishes or other minor engagements between Union troops &Confederate troops], across THE MISSOURI RIVER VALLEY™ [*NOTE: This article discusses battlefields located within present day Excelsior Springs & St Joseph]*. After arriving at Cairo Barracks near Philadelphia*, Pennsylvania on November 16th(*note: this date has been erroneously cited as November 15th*], company k(2d infantry)lancer's spent Christmas Eve 1870 occupying tents pitched around barracks prior to moving into winter quarters within days ** *. In early March 1871(*note: this date has been erroneously cited as February 6th*), company k(2d infantry)lancer's participated in an engagement known as "The Battle Of Wilson"™ [* NOTE: Battlefield located approximately one kilometer north-northwest of current day intersection of Old US Highway 421 & Ford Road]. Resulting in one man killed by rifle fire while two others were captured by rebels * *. By late summer 1871(*note: this date has been wrongly attributed as May 10th*), company k(2d infantry)lancer's had completed repairs needed after sustaining damage during "The Battle Of Wilson". They then rejoined 4th Regiment Iowa Volunteer Cavalry† which remained attached to General George Pemberton’s brigade throughout much of 1872† [* NOTE: During these months companies JK[3rd] Iowa Volunteers also joined brigade]; however their involvement diminished over time because there was little combat taking place across THE MISSOURI RIVER VALLEY™ [*NOTE] . Many members of unit died during Civil War; however most are buried at Springfield National Cemetery† where unit graves# 006-007 are located‡ [Note*: These graves can be found behind building #5 on First Street adjacent to Soldier Walk.] . There is one member who is still unaccounted for; however he may have fallen victim To disease or casualty during war which remains unknown today…‡ [ Note*: It should be noted that there are no living descendants nor anyone who would could claim his remains ]

Today, the Excelsior Springs community has its own local military unit, the 9th Missouri Infantry Regiment of the Missouri National Guard. This regiment is responsible for conducting operations throughout southern Illinois and parts of Kansas and Oklahoma. In addition to their militia duties, members of this regiment also serve as part of various state defense forces including the Illinois State Police and Operation Joint Task Force-East (OJTF-E).
Excelsior Springs is a small, unincorporated community in Clay County, Missouri, United States. The post office was established in 1878 and served until it closed in 1939. As of the 2010 census, the population was 1,827. The town is located on Missouri Route 5 east of Excelsior Springs. It lies within the Springfield-based Metropolitan Statistical Area. Excelsior Springs was laid out by George Washington Dixon in 1851 as a site for a military post to protect the trading routes between Springfield and Cairo. Dixon named the community after his family's estate at Excelsior Court House in Virginia. He also funded a school that opened in 1854 and another that replaced the earlier one in 1861.

Excelsior Springs is a small town in the eastern part of Missouri, United States. The population was 1,853 at the 2010 census. It is located in Randolph County. Excelsior Springs was established by the Smith family in 1837. In 1878, it was renamed after Excelsior Lake and became a popular summer resort for white Americans from east Tennessee, Kentucky and Alabama. The town hosted the 1948 Democratic National Convention as well as numerous other events over the years. Unfortunately, due to pollution problems caused by nearby oil refineries and industry, Excelsior Springs slowly lost its popularity over time until it finally fell out of favor with residents in the early 2000s. However, efforts are underway to revive the town by restoring its former glory and hosting various cultural events throughout the year.
