Excelsior Springs, Missouri is a small town in the Ozarks region of Missouri that was founded in 1872. The population was 8,562 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Springfield metropolitan area. The first gift to be given in Excelsior Springs was a rifle from Captain George Washington Dixon of St. Louis (1784-1832). In 1875, Reverend John Fenton gave away a piano and organ to help promote music in the town. In 1902, Mrs. Edwin Ladd made an unsuccessful campaign for office as a Democrat because she could not afford to buy election literature. She instead put together a group of friends who offered to write her donations on slips of paper and send them to her door. In 1907, the town voted unanimously to name its square after General William Tecumseh Sherman (1814-1865). This event helped add some excitement and interest into life in Excelsior Springs during those early years. In 1912, Mr. and Mrs. Julius Rosenwald donated $5,000 towards the erection of a new library in Excelsior Springs which became one of America's most important libraries for many years afterwards! With this donation, our present library building began its long journey from being used as an old garage into becoming one of the most popular places for people to visit in our community! Excelsior Springs was once one of the most important railroad towns in America and has been known for its premieres such as Harry Houdini and Zsa Zsa Gabor. The town's history dates back to 1849 when a group of German immigrants named Hauptman settled in what is now Excelsior Springs on the same land that became St. Peters Township. In 1872, General James Longstreet ordered all German settlers removed from their land east of White River; this order led to much unrest among the new residents who had no choice but to leave their homes and move westward into what is now Webster Township. After only two years in business, John Hauptman organized a company to build a bridge over the White River and named it Excelsior Bridge Co., Inc.. When construction began on the original bridge, there were threats by local Indian tribes that they would burn it down if it was completed; fortunately for everyone involved, work continued uninterrupted despite these challenges. Several other businesses followed suit including Hauptmans Clothing & Supply Co., which survived until 1957; also thriving during this time were shoe stores Saginaw Shoes (now JCPenney) and Smith’s Rugs & Carpeting Co.; both closed within 5 years of opening due to changing fashion tastes and economic conditions in St. Louis County more generally). Excelsior Springs was founded in 1848 by John Wesley Storrs. The community grew rapidly after the discovery of a gold mine in 1853, and by 1862 it had a population of over 1,000 people. In 1865, the first post office was established in Excelsior Springs. It remained in operation until 1903. The first school was built in 1851, and the first physician was appointed in 1861. The town continued to grow quickly after that, and by 1870 it had a population of 3,500 people. In 1872, Excelsior Springs became an independent city under the laws of Missouri. By 1912 it had reached its peak population size with 4,500 people. However, during World War I the town suffered heavily from military casualties; by 1918 its total number had decreased to 350 residents. In 1920 Excelsior Springs united with nearby communities of Ferguson and White Oak to form the City of Ferguson-Excelsior Springs-White Oak Township Formation; however, this merger did not last long because Ferguson-Excelsior Springs withdrew fromthe formation in 1922. From 1925 until 1957 Excelsior Springs was part of St Louis County; however, due to rising demographics and economic problems withinSt Louis County (particularly downtown), early efforts to merge into St Louis failed miserably; as a result many residents chose to move away fromStLouis County altogether while still living there permanently or temporarily). In 1960 St Louis County annexed most of neighboring St Joseph County including ExcelsiorSprings; however this annexation did not last very long because many residents chose to leaveStLouisCounty for greener pastures elsewhere within Missouri or Illinois respectively).
