Fresh roasted coffee is a centuries-old tradition in Creve Coeur, Missouri. The beans are ground fresh and brewed on site. The first coffee shop in the town was founded in 1859 by J.D. Smith and Wm. Henson. The two men traded goods from their farmlands and started brewing coffee together. In 1865, the first post office in the town was established and soon after, merchants began to set up shop around thetown to sell fresh roasted coffee. In 1872, John Pemberton opened his own grocery store in town and soon began buying beans from local farmers for his shop’s customers. By 1886, Pemberton had built a large roasting house within walking distance of his store that he used to roast beans himself. By 1890, three years after Mr. Pemberton’s death, Creve Coeur had its first grocery store with an espresso machine inside it called “Pembertons Coffee House” which served as a commercial center for fresh roasted coffee until 1903 when the first soda fountain appeared in town square near where now stands theCreveCoeur Museum of Art (now known as Gateway National Monument). In 1902–1904, Harry Kellar ran a small grocery store on Main Street adjacent to Pembroke Presbyterian Church which became one of the most popular spots for breakfast during prohibition days because it offered coffee all day long without having to go out into Prohibition-era Detroit or other areas with restrictions on intoxicating drinks

In 1941, J.C. Penney began selling coffee from their store on Main Street in Creve Coeur. The store continued to sell coffee until it closed in 1984. The first roastery was established at the corner of Prospect and Market Streets in Creve Coeur by Edwin "Pete" Kapp and his wife Betty in 1957. Kapp would later open another roastery called First Choice Coffee Company adjacent to his original business on Prospect Avenue near Main Street in 1978. As of 2019, there are currently three roasteries operating within the city limits of Creve Coeur: First Choice Coffee Company (1978), Edwin "Pete" Kapp's Original crepecoeur Coffee Store (1941), and JcPenney'screvecoeurStore(1941).

Creve Coeur is a city in St. Louis County, Missouri, United States. The population was 23,362 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Saint Louis metropolitan area. The Creve Coeur Army Air Base and nearby Ferguson Field are also located in the city. The first European contact with what is now Creve Coeur may have occurred on July 24, 1673 when French explorer Pierre Bougainville sighted land to the south of present-day St. Louis and named it "Bougainvillea." This name may be derived from crevette meaning "small harbour," "coeur" meaning heart or seat of life, and coeur being French for "mouth." In 1806, Lieutenant Colonel John Swayne explored this area and named it Prairie du Chien because he thought it might be rich in coal reserves. He found no coal reserves but did spot some valuable minerals such as quartz and marble which he sold to various entrepreneurs before his death in 1810 at the age of 61 years old. In 1827, planter James Wilkinson purchased 640 acres (248 hectares) east of the current city limits for $40 per acre ($2 per square kilometer). Wilkinson named his tract Pheasant Run because he believed that a large quantity of pheasants would thrive there due to good soil conditions and lack of competition from other landowners near by. The first house was built on this property in 1830 by Philip Hite who ran a gristmill that produced flour for local grocery stores until 1861 when Alexander Fleming came across flour mills operating offsite near modern day Anacostia Heights in Prince George's County so Hite moved his flour mill over to CreveCoeur where it continued production until 1904 When Anacostia Heights became an incorporated town they kept the flour mill as their municipal assets which still produce flour today known as Olde CreveCoeur Flour Mill #1 (now part of Eastern Market Place).
