The Creve Coeur Army Garrison was founded in 1854, and it has served the community continuously since. The Garrison is responsible for maintaining law and order in the town, as well as providing support to the Creve Coeur Police Department. It also offers a variety of activities, including music programs, theatrical productions, and summer camps. The Garrison's history can be traced back to 1854 when Colonel John T. Campbell organized a company of Missouri Volunteers to garrison duty at Fort Donelson on the Chickasaw River. In 1861, Captain George H. Hersey organized another company to garrison duty at Fort Stewart on the river north of Corinth. In 1865, General Andrew Johnson ordered the Garrison closed because of Confederate threats against Union forces in Illinois Heights (now Springfield). reopened in 1870 with 1,500 men under command of Lt. Col. Augustus Ayer Jr.. By 1880 there were 5 companies stationed at Creve Coeur with a complement of 12 officers and 149 enlisted men. In 1902Captain Clarence Wetherbee formed an independent battery at Fort Stephenson which became part of the Garrison's artillery department in 1907 Upon Captain Wetherbee's death in 1918 his battery was redesignated Battery 214th Infantry Regiment ColumbiaMissouriNational Guard on 9/15/1918

Creve Coeur is a small town in St. Francois County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,151 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Kansas City metropolitan area. The Creve Coeur post office was established in 1854 and discontinued in 1951. The land that now comprises Creve Coeur was first settled by European Americans around 1800 as part of Shawnee County, Oklahoma Territory. The town was named after French general Jean-Baptiste Colbert while he was stationed at Fort Leavenworth in wagon country west of Topeka, Kansas Territory. In 1854, the United States Congress passed a bill establishing the towns of Lawrence and Topeka within Shawnee County as part of newly organized Missouri Territory. When it became clear that the territory would not be ceded to Kansas until Nebraska became a state in 1867, topographical features such as this small creek called Creve Coeur were included on maps for future settlements in what is today St. Francois County. In 1861, during the American Civil War, General John Custer's 7th Cavalry Regiment were headquartered at nearby Pawnee National Grasslands outside present day Wichita Falls, Texas when they encountered Union forces under Brigadier General George Armstrong Custer near the village of Woodville south of Creve Coeur on October 15th near what is now Interstate 35W about thirteen miles northeast from Wichita Falls; Battle Creek Bridge still stands acrossOODVILLE Creek east of I-35W just past mile marker 158 (Old US Highway 6). During this engagement Pvt James Fenton fatally shot Lt Col Richard Sheldon and two other officers before being killed himself; one account puts him behind an old tree which still remains visible atop Donnybrook Hill looking north towardsBattle Creek Bridge; another accounts says he crawled into an abandoned house some distance back from action where he took shelter with 11 others including his mother who later died from exposure.; A third account reports that most men cleared wooded hills east and southeast of where battle occurred after surrendering their weapons to avoid being captured or killed by Confederate troops; This event has been variously memorialized as “Fenton’s Charge” or “Custer’s defeat”; As late as 1978–79 archaeological excavations at nearby Ft Scott Army Base produced evidence that there had been prior skirmishes between Union and Confederate forces over a two day period preceding Custer’s encounter with Lt Col Sheldon/Lt Col Richard Sheldon on October 15th.; A plaque erected to commemorate these events reads: Herein lies one half century anniversary since Indian Wars brought consequences reaching far beyond frontier soil CreveCoeur Post Office opened on July 14th 1855 ; closed November 5th 1951 due to lack of mail volume Postmaster : G H Weaver (1856-1951)
