In 1870, the U.S. Railway built a line from Kansas City to Crestwood and developed the town as an agricultural center around this railroad station. By 1900, Crestwood had a grocery store, four banks (two of which were national banks), seven churches, three schools (grades K-12), two physicians' offices and one sawmill. The last active black resident of Crestwood died in 1984; all remaining African Americans have since left due to gentrification and changes within Jackson County overall since then. The few remaining black residents continue to engage with community events and work towards reversing some of these negative trends that have arisen over time while trying to maintain some connection to their ancestral home throughout their lives
