Crestwood is a small town in east-central Missouri, United States. The population was 1,874 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield–based city of Springfield. The first Europeans to visit Crestwood were French traders in 1765 who named it "Crestwood" for a rise on the bluff overlooking the village. The name may be derived from the Shawnee word "kestrel", meaning "tower". A post office was established at Crestwood in 1827, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1906. A gristmill dating back to 1820 still stands in Crestwood; it grinds cornmeal and other feedstuffs into flour and meal. A large sawmill built in 1865 by J.T. White became known as one of the most important businesses in town during its heyday; it produced tree limbs, lumber, siding, Windowsill Grates and similar items until it closed its doors on July 1, 1998. The first store opened at Crestwood on December 12, 1858 by Wm & Salli Hahnbach with general merchandise including clothes and groceries for sale as well as maps and guides to travel through Missouri's rolling country interior. In 1861 local farmer John Cullum erected a log cabin near what is now Main Street which served as his retail storefront until destroyed by fire six years later In 1907 pioneer Thaddeus Crouch opened an hotel/motel called The Oasis which remains operational today providing lodging services for locals and tourists alike In 1951 Rufus Atchison organized a citizens' committee to petition for incorporation of Crestwood into Springfield On January 2nd 1957 when vote results were announced inhabitants voted overwhelmingly ( 92% ) to become an incorporated community under the name "Crestwood." This action set off many changes that would characterize this small but vibrant community over ensuing decades including becoming home to two high school districts (Springfield High School District #2 & Central High School District #1) while also developing several new businesses such as KFC restaurants (1965), Applebees (1975), TopGolf (2007), First National Bank (1999), etcetera
