On November 5, 1865, the Missouri National Guard was created to bolster the Union occupation of the area. The unit served until September 1893. In 1932, the Missouri National Guard became an all-volunteer force and was renamed the Missouri Army National Guard. Crestwood, Missouri is a small town located in northwest Missouri. The population was 1,384 at the 2010 census. Crestwood is part of the Shawnee Heights, MO Micropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in Crestwood was Dr. James Denton who arrived in 1820. In 1824, the community was named for John Fenton, 3rd Viscount Grafton and a member of Parliament from London. The Fentons were English landowners who had purchased land on the edge of present-day Shawnee Heights from the French in 1763. The first post office was established in 1829 and remained open until it closed in 1912. The town grew rapidly during the late 19th century due to its location near Routes 66 and 72; both routes provided access to Kansas City and St Louis. The arrival of railroads led to an increase in business and population; by 1900 Crestwood had over 2,000 residents.During World War I, Crestwood produced food for military purposes and also manufactured munitions used by the war effort including machine guns and artillery shells. In 1919, Crestwood became an independent city with its own mayor and council; it would remain that way until 1959 when it merged with nearby Shawnee Heights into one municipality under one government system called "Shawnee Hills."
