Crestwood, Missouri is home to the United States Air Force's (USAF) 9th Mountain Division. The division was activated on October 1, 1947 and has since been one of the USAF's most visible and active divisions. The division's history begins with World War II when the unit was activated as part of the Ninth Air Force. During the war, the division served in both Europe and Asia. AfterWWII, the division underwent a number of changes before becoming an operational wing in 1957. In 1960, it became an air assault wing and in 1970 it changed its name to "9th Mountain Division". Since activation, the 9th Mountain Division has deployed numerous times throughout operations in support of Operation Desert Shield/Storm (1991-1993), Operation Iraqi Freedom (2003-2007), Operation New Dawn (2011-2013), Operation Enduring Freedom (2001-2006) and contingency operations worldwide. Throughout its history, the 9th mountain division has displayed a strong commitment to service members and their families. The Missouri Air National Guard's 1st Squadron, Fighter Group (1 FG), was activated on July 24, 1941 at Crestwood Army Ammunition Plant in St. Louis County. The squadron was equipped with Curtiss P-40 Warhawk fighters and became operational on October 10th. In 1942 the 1 FG was redesignated the 108th Fighter Wing and relocated to Bellefontaine AFB, Kentucky where it began training new pilots for service in Japan. The wing moved again in 1945 to Okinawa before being disbanded on October 15th.
Crestwood, Missouri is a small town located in the Ozarks region of southern Missouri. The population was 2,876 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield-East Plains-Centralia Micropolitan Statistical Area. The township was founded in 1837 by Peter and Lucy (Lambert) Crestwood. It named for John Fenton, an early settler and postmaster in nearby East Prairie. The community had a rapid growth after it was designated as the county seat of Taylor County in 1851. By 1860, Crestwood had a population of 1,500 people and it became the state capital of Kansas Territory in 1861 when that territory was created from parts of Missouri and Illinois. In 1865, when Missouri seceded from the Union, Crestwood became part of new Arkansas Territory. In 1892, Crestwood acquired its present name when local officials decided to change the name for all towns within their boundaries to honor General Andrew Jourdain's victory over Mexico at Palo Alto on October 15 that year during what is known as "The Mexican War." At this time most residents still spoke Old English while some continued to use Spanish until they were instructed to switch back in 1922 by then-Mayor Harry Laddey because many American Mexicans living in or near Crestwood were working on land owned by settlers loyal to Mexico who wanted them out since they considered their country an imperial power. This paper will explore the history of airforce gift history. From its beginnings in 1917 as a small aviation unit, the United States Air Force has contributed many gifts to society. The RAF was founded in 1940 as a secret service organization within British intelligence, tasked with providing worldwide cover for Allied forces during World War II. The RAF was also responsible for carrying out unarmed bombing raids on German targets in North Africa and Europe during that time period. In 1947, after World War II ended, the USAF became an independent branch of the government with its own distinct identity and mission. On July 29th 1951 President Harry S Truman authorized creation of four new commands within the USAF: Tactical Air Command (TAC), Strategic Air Command (SAC), Bomber Command (BC), and Air Defense Command (ADC). These commands were redesignated on October 1st 1953 as Aerospace Forces Service Commands (AFS). The USAAF has made a number of donations to other nations throughout its history. For example, in 1954 President Eisenhower presented General Dwight D Eisenhower with two MiG-15 fighter planes as part of his Presidential Award for distinguished services to American Aviation. Another donation by the USAAF came in 1958 when it donated five C-47 Globemaster III aircrafts to West Germany in order to help bolster their fledgling air force during the Cold War era. In 1969 The USAF donated six F-105 Thunderchief jets to South Vietnam in order provide airlift support for their People’s Army during their conflict against North Vietnam. Additionally, between 1945 and 1971 over ninety thousand items were donated by various members of Congress aloneto support military causes throughout America! With all these donations comes a certain level of expectation among those who receive these gifts; they are known as “Air Forcegift Legend” or simply “the AF Gift” because no one knows exactly when or how they were obtained or what specific goals they may have served at particular times or places………. Crestwood, Missouri is a small town in the Ozarks of north-central Missouri. It was founded in 1836 by General John Sedgwick and his wife Elizabeth Winchester. Crestwood grew rapidly during the 19th century, thanks to its natural resources and its location on the Arkansas River. In 1860, it became the county seat of St. Francois County. The population of Crestwood declined during the 20th century, but has resumed its growth since 2000 as a result of new development in the area. The first settlers in Crestwood were three brothers who came from Kentucky: George Washington Hardesty, James Hardesty, and Thomas Hardesty. They built a cabin on an bluff overlooking the river near what is now the intersection of U.S. Route 56 and Interstate 44 (the old I-44 beltway). The brothers named their property "Crestwood" after their home state of Kentucky. In 1836, General John Sedgwick arrived at Crestwood with his family to establish a trading post on the Arkansas River above present day downtown Crestwood. After several years of hard work building his fortification and trading goods with Native Americans living along the river, Sedgwick was successful in acquiring enough land around Fort Pierre for a permanent settlement. He named his new community "CrestWOOD" after himself and his wife Elizabeth Winchester (née Higginson) – both natives of Kentuckiana – and developed it into one of North America's most rapidly growing settlements during the 19th century due to its natural resources (including timber), strategic location on an important trade route linking eastward via Central Missouri with eastern Kansas City, Illinois, and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; as well as its close proximity to major city centers such as Kansas City and St Louis.[1] During this time period, Crestwood also attracted many Methodists from southern Appalachia who had emigrated to North America to proselytize among native Indian populations about Christianity.[2][3] As more people moved into town over time, commercial enterprises began developing that contributed significantly to its growth – including taverns/beer gardens/, storehouses/fairs/picnics/, livery stables/horse farms/, blacksmith shops/(or foundry), breweries/(or distilleries)), schools(grades 1-12 public schools; grades 13 & up local academies), churches( Methodist / Baptist / Presbyterian / Lutheran / Episcopal), physician services(Dr David Sherer practicing at 2nd hospital until 1870 then Dr Arthur Paysonbranded himself Doctornavigation Professor at Northwestern University Medical School 1830-1930), architecturally significant residences such as Mrs Harry Kapp's Mansion (=now part of Eastern State Penitentiary) (~1840 - 1910)[4],[5][6] etc.;[7][8][9] while maintaining an overall rural setting that contributed significantly to Crestwoods' charm,[10] uniqueness,[11][12] etc., through farmers markets*, agricultural production* ([corn], potatoes*, peas*, beans*, squash*) [*notably notable for having been one of only two places west of Interstate 44 where corn still thrive today]), dog sledding (*still popular], hiking(*hiking trails are available throughout much or all acreage within municipal limits)), fishing (−both big game hunting†and fly Casting†– noteworthy for having produced some world famous species like walleye†and catfish**)[13],[14]), golfing (− holes are located just outside municipal boundaries on both sides Of Little Colorado River *nearby*) [*one course is open year round*];[15],[16],[17]) *Note: These activities were typically relegated to off street areas adjacent or included within municipal boundaries rather than being conducted inside Municipal buildings themselves
