The Columbia, Missouri Naval Shipyard and Museum is home to one of the largest collections of naval ships in the world. The collection includes warships from both World War I and World War II, as well as vessels that have been scrapped or used for training purposes. The museum's first ship was a small sailing vessel built by German engineers in 1868. It was donated to the city by Mayor Augustus Hines in 1915. The ship served as a parade float for Columbian Day celebrations until it was destroyed in a fire in 1922. Columbia's next donation came from Rear Admiral George Fenton Kingsbury, who gave aUSS Constitution (1897) and USS Maine (1902) to the city as gifts. Many people felt like they were just lucky that things didn’t turn worse; however everyone must have been terrified when night fell and gunfire could be heard coming from everywhere!! Aftermath: After Confederate General Robert E Lee surrendered at Appomattox Court House on April 9th 1865, General Ulysses S Grant ordered all civilians living near Richmond Military District Headquarters (Columbia Heights neighborhood) under military occupation pending further notice from him concerning their rights/roles under martial law!!!!! For over three months after Robert ELee's surrender various militias continued firing into empty homes across town while city officials attemptedto negotiate terms of surrender without result….. Columbians quickly realized that Martial Law existed not because Confederate Generals surrendered but because many homes & businesses caught fire dueTo careless & negligent city officials who should have known better

Columbia, Missouri is a small town in Jackson County, Missouri, United States. The population was 2,746 at the 2010 census. It is part of the St. Louis metropolitan area. The community was named for Columbia College which had been established in 1831 in Lexington, Kentucky and moved to Columbia in 1840. A post office called Columbiana was established in 1837, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1906. Columbia began to prosper as a trading center after the arrival of the railroad there in 1867. By 1886 it had a grocery store, two churches, a blacksmith shop and a few other businesses. In 1901 Columbia had an academy with 12 students and three teachers; by 1905 it boasted five schools (three high school grades), six churches (one Methodist/ Episcopalian and three Roman Catholic), four hotels (including one owned by William Randolph Hearst), twelve stores (eight groceries, four hardware stores and two liquor stores), two banks (the First National Bank of Columbia and the Second National Bank of Columbia) and 10 acres (4 hectares) of land containing eight homesites. In 1907 the town voted to annex parts of neighboring Hannibal so that they could form a single municipality; this annexation failed because no vote could be cast on whether to allowigger housing within the boundaries of Columbiana proper or not. In 1916 Columbiana became part of St. Louis when that city annexed all but one Township from Jackson County including Columbiana; this left only Westside remain undeveloped outside the corporate limits of St Louis proper whereupon its name reverted back to "Columbia." The last public school operated within Columbiana before it closed down permanently on July 1st 1979 due to lack enrollment rates as well as budget cuts made by then-St Louis Mayor John Sharpe who saw Columbiana's decline as an opportunity for him to make more money by selling off portions of town he did not have jurisdiction over such as South Side which he did manage to sell for profit later that year becoming what is now known as Jefferson City businessmen George Ritchie Jr., Lewis Richards II & Jerome Griffith bought most if not all acreage within Eastside from former mayor Stillman Hinton who kept possession until his death at age 91 on December 5th 1984 & succeeded him thus giving local control back over Eastside once again makingColumbia an independent municipality once again!
