When Columbia, Missouri was first settled in 1836, it was a small agricultural community located on the north banks of the Arkansas River. Soon after, business owners and farmers began to explore and develop the area around Columbia. They founded a few businesses and developed a mechanic shop, an agricultural store, and a sawmill. By 1840, there were about 50 people living in Columbia. As new entrepreneurs opened up businesses in Columbia, they realized that it would be important to have a strong local economy so that they could continue to provide good services and support their families. In 1845, The Missouri Pacific Railroad reached Columbia from Illinois. This made it possible for businessmen and farmers to sell goods and services more easily from their homes. Additionally, with this rail line came increased traffic which led to more jobs for local residents. In 1850, the town of Columbia had about 100 residents; by 1860 it had grown to over 1200 people. Most of these people were farmers who grew crops or raised livestock. However, some individuals also became involved in trade or commerce. For example, John Hagopian started a grocery store in 1857 which soon became one of the largest in town. He also helped found The Masonic Lodge No 2 in 1865 which still meets today
Columbia, Missouri was founded by the Union Pacific Railroad in 1849. The town quickly became a center for trade and industry, thanks to its location at the junction of two major railroads. In 1865, Columbia was designated as the seat of government for St. Louis County, Missouri. The city continued to grow until it reached its peak in the early 20th century. During that time, Columbia experienced a number of significant technological advances including the construction of several major hospitals and schools as well as the foundation of several professional sports teams. However, during World War II Columbia was hit hard by wartime damage and restrictions on business activity. By 1945 all but one of the city's businesses had closed or gone out of business. Since then Columbia has slowly recovered, becoming an important cultural and economic center again.
