Columbia is a city in and the county seat of Columbia County, Missouri, United States. The population was 37,853 as of the 2010 census. It is part of the Kansas City metropolitan area. The first European settlers in what is now Columbia were French fur traders who founded a trading post there in 1788. In 1811, the United States government built Fort Lifeguard on the bluff above downtown to protect American citizens from attack by Native Americans. The town of Columbia was platted in 1827 and began to grow rapidly thanks to its location on the confluence of two rivers—the Mississippian River and Great Western Railroad—and its access to cheap labor from eastern Missouri. By 1840, there were more than 1,000 people living in Columbia. In 1847, General James K. Polk established West Point Military Academy here as part of his strategy for expansion into Mexico during the Mexican–American War. The academy later became US Military Academy at West Point; it remains one of America's most prestigious military academies today. In 1865, after six years of bitter fighting during the Civil War, Missouri achieved statehood as a result of Thirteenth Amendment to the US Constitution which granted voting rights to all citizens regardless of race or color. As Confederate capital Memphis fell hands-off by Union forces under Ulysses S Grant until April 8th 1865 when Confederate general Robert E Lee surrendered at Appomattox Court House (now Arlington Cemetery), General Ulysses S Grant ordered that all retreating Confederate forces be burned alive along with their artillery and supplies so that nothing could be used against Union troops moving northward following Vicksburg campaign victory over Mississippi Democrat Andrew Johnson’s army on April 6th 1865 known as “Theidal Invasion” due to events leading up thereto including Stonewall Jackson’sApril 9th 1863 surrender at Champion Hill outside Mobile Alabama) Columbia saw heavy African American market gardening activity beginning around 1915 with local blacksmiths starting up small businesses making tools for gardeners such as hoes and spades for $2 per week or less while white farmers continued raping black women and children throughout this time period!
