The Coast Guard Gift History in Columbia, Missouri began on December 15th, 1941 with the organization of the Coast Guard Reserve. The Coast Guard Regimental Headquarters was created in Columbia, Missouri on this date and responsibility for all aspects of the Coast Guard were placed within it. On January 1st, 1942 the first unit to be assigned to the new headquarters was the USCGC Mariner. This vessel had been requisitioned from the Sturgeon Bay Shipbuilding Co., St. Paul, Minnesota and modified by Commander Edward J. King for service in coastal defense duty. The USCGC Mariner became one of the original eleven vessels designated as part of United States Coastal Defense Forces under Executive Order 9981 on February 2nd, 1942. On May 25th, 1945 a gift was made to the Coast Guard Reserve by President Harry S Truman which consisted of two destroyers – USS Constitution (BB-38) and USS Porter (DD-8) – and four large Landing Craft Infantry (LCI’s), LCI(L)-5’s being delivered at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, New Hampshire as follows: USS Constitution (BB-38) - Commander John L. The Coast Guard is a branch of the military and its mission is to protect and support American interests in the oceans and airspace. In 1916, Congress created the Coast Guard Reserve to provide shore guard services for vessels in trouble or detained by customs authorities ashore. The first commandant of the Coast Guards was Rear Admiral John W. Farragut. From 1920-1921, Commodore Clarence Ledyard served as Commandant of the Coast Guards Auxiliary Service (CGAS). CGAS provided personnel, equipment, supplies, and training for coast guard units onshore at various locations around the country. In 1921-1922 Commodore Ernest J. King served as Commandant of CGAS’s Offshore Patrol Squadron 1 which operated out of Governors Island, New York City. After World War II ended, CGAS was divided into several commands including: Coastal Security Forces (CSSF), Offshore Patrol Squadron (OPS), Air Traffic Control Wing (ATCW) – all former CGAS commands were united into one command under Commander Ninth Naval District during peacetime in 1949 known as Commander Ninth Naval District - United States Coast Guard

Columbia, Missouri is a small town located in Cass County, Missouri. The population was 2,611 at the 2010 census. The Columbia area was first settled by European Americans in the 1830s. The town was founded on the site of an old millrace, and it became a local center for cotton production during the early days of white settlement in Cass County. In 1857, Columbia became the seat of Cass County when it was established following a referendum vote. It remained as such until 1907 when it merged with Lawrence to form Columbiadale. The two towns completely separate again until 1949 when they were once again merged into one municipality. At that point, Columbiadale included all ofCass County except for one small piece located in Jackson Township which remains part of Lawrence today. Columbia has experienced many changes throughout its history- most notably during World War II when it served as a military base forthe United States Army Air Forces during the war effort. After the war ended, Columbia reverted back to its original status as a small town and began to experience rapid growth thanks to tourism and other economic opportunities brought about by post-war prosperity. Today, Columbia is still an important community within Cass County and offers residents a wide variety of cultural experiences available through its various attractions and businesses.
The town of Columbia, Missouri was founded by the Missouri Company on the farmstead of John Brantly in 1770. The town was named after General James K. Polk and his wife, Rachel Lincoln Polk. The company built a trading post and store near present-day Columbia in 1771. In 1811, the United States acquired from Great Britain control of what is now Montana Territory. As a result, Columbia became part of that territory and was known as "British Columbia." In 1847, when Kansas Territory was formed from parts of Oregon Territory, Columbia became part of that territory as well. In 1861, when Confederate forces attacked Fort Sumter in South Carolina, General Robert E. Lee ordered his army to move against Union forces at Corinth instead. When news reachedColumbia that Confederate troops were marching through town without orders or escort, citizens quickly assembled supplies and munitions to defend their homes and businesses. That nightfall alone, they produced over two thousand rounds of ammunition and three hundred cannons.# On April 14th 1865 (the day before President Abraham Lincoln's assassination), Union soldiers discovered Confederate troops entrenched around Corinth waiting to attack if necessary# yielding no resistance until truce negotiations arrived the following morning; at which point Confederate Brigadier General J Smith surrendered unconditionally with knowledge his unit would be burned if he didn't# . Columbia therefore became an integral part of Reconstruction Era America # helping to change its demographics from slaveholding society into one where African Americans constituted a majority by 1920%.
