The Columbia, Missouri Army National Guard has a long and storied history of providing support to the local community. The first white people to live in Columbia, Missouri were the Robertson brothers. The Robertson brothers came to Columbia in 1819 and started a farm. They also built a cabin on the banks of the Mississippi River. In 1830, Alexander Robertson married Rachelle Sparks and they moved to Columbia. The first school in Columbia was built byAlexander and Rachelle Roberston. The Robertsons also bought land around town and started a small grocery store. They also donated money to build the first church in Columbia. In 1831, Alexander Robertson died and his wifeRachelle took over the business. She continued to run it until her death in 1865. After her death, the business was passed down through her two daughters until it became part of JCPenney Corporation in 1967.
