Columbia, Missouri is a city in St. Louis County, Missouri, United States. The population was 21,827 at the 2010 census. It is the ninth-largest city in St. Louis County and the largest city in the state of Missouri. The area now called Columbia was first settled by French colonists in 1763 as part of what is now Eastern Missouri and was named for George Washington's home town of Alexandria, Virginia. In 1821, the eastern portions of present-day Columbia were organized as a township under territorial jurisdiction and named for General James K. Polk's birthplace on the banks of the Missouri River during his father's lifetime. Columbiadale Township lost its status when Kansas Territory was created on January 1, 1861; it joined Uniontown Township to form Columbiadale City on November 3 that year due to numerical superiority according to population figures from then-Uniontown over Columbiadale Township's 10 residents. Columbia, Missouri is a city in the U.S. state of Missouri. The population was 8,853 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Kansas City metropolitan area. Columbia was founded in 1839 as an independent town by Latter-day Saint pioneers and named for General James K. Polk, who had won a major victory against Mexico in that year's presidential election. The town grew rapidly during the 1850s and 1860s due to its location on the Santa Fe Trail and its position as a center for trade with Iowa and Illinois. In 1868, Columbia became one of thirty-six cities in Missouri to become established as counties when it was organized as a county seat of Boone County. By 1900, Columbia had become one of America's largest cities with a population over 100,000 people. However, during World War I (1914–18), Columbia experienced significant damage from artillery shelling by German troops retreating from Belgium across the river Rhine into Germany after their winter campaign there; this destroyed much of the downtown business district and left many residents homeless for months or years afterwards. In 1932, President Franklin D Roosevelt designated Columbia home to both Headquarters for United States Information Service (USIS) and Social Security Administration (SSA) regional offices; these were eventually moved to Washington D C two years later because thereof were located more central office space than offered in surrounding jurisdictions such as Kansas City proper or Springfield Township which bordered on Columbia Proper eastward along Interstate 65 until just before it crossed into Rolla Township west of Topeka; this caused some resentment among certain local politicians who saw themselves being marginalized while other municipalities within Missouri's St Louis metropolitan area enjoyed better facilities courtesy of their incorporation into larger entities although they continued to serve separate Functions under those same jurisdictions at all times thereafter save for Name changes).
