Clayton, Missouri is a town in Pottawatomie County, Kansas, United States. The population was 1,421 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Shawnee Heights Micropolitan Statistical Area. Clayton was founded in 1859 by James Fenton and his brother-in-law David Cline. The first post office was established in Clayton on March 12, 1860. The community name change to Clay on October 15, 1861 due to discussion of whether it should be called "Cline" or "Clayton". The original square block of land that now forms the core of Clayton was surveyed in 1864 and platted November 5th, 1865 by Philip Henshaw and others. In 1870–71 a school district was organized with Clayton as its base; this system served all of Pottawatomie County until 1976 when it became a part of Topeka. On April 14, 1907 the present courthouse building replaced an earlier structure which had been destroyed by a fire two years earlier. The first white settler in Clay Township (now Clay) was Levi Cook who arrived around 1830 from Kentucky with his family. He built a log cabin near what is now the south edge of town on what is now Cook Road. Cook moved away from his cabin about 1840 and eventually purchased 160 acres (65 hectares) east of town where he built a large frame farmstead which remain extant to this day – today’s site of Lone Tree Casino Resort & Spa! Another early settler in Clayton Township was John Witherspoon who arrived there around 1830 from Pennsylvania with his family also including children William and Sarah Witherspoon born about 1821 and 1825 respectively. John married Rachel Ladd about 1840 and their five children were: Daniel (born about 1843), Nancy Ann (born about 1850), Elijah Woodruff (born about1854),John Quincy Adams Witherspoon (born about 1860)and Lucy Anna Witherspoon Davenport (born 1862). After purchase from Cookstown residents soon began arriving in increasing numbers through various wagon train trips transporting goods overland up the Santa Fe Trail to Wichita area markets via Independence Junction – thus beginning Kansas’ commercial growth! In addition many farmers followed logging roads leading out west into Indian Territory during this time period bringing lumber back home along their way! Overall much development took place during these years not only within Clay Townships but also across all rural areas surrounding Pottawatomie County… such as Anadarko where physician Dr Samuel Mather opened an hospital/medical clinic in 1866 serving patients from all over western Kansas! By 1870 most residents had relocated or passing away leaving behind few buildings remaining standing except for someLog Cabin still standing today

Clayton, Missouri is a small town in the Gallatin Mountains of rural Missouri. The population was 8,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the St. Louis metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1837 by Methodist missionaries from Georgia and named for their leader, James Clayton. After a few years, it became a stopping place on the fur trade route between St. Louis and destinations such as Detroit and Chicago. In 1863, because of its strategic location near where the Kansas–Nebraska Bill was being debated in Congress, Clayton became one of the first towns to be established on both sides of that important issue. The town's growth continued through the late 19th century with an influx of settlers from Illinois, Indiana, and Ohio; most notably Methodists who built what is now called "the White Building" on Main Street in 1865-67 as their headquarters while they negotiated issues related to slavery and states' rights during this time period. Some residents also began operating businesses such as a grocery store and post office before World War I brought about an increase in military traffic through Clayton which led to increased development around Main Street including several frame buildings housing businesses before those were replaced with more recent buildings over time including a shopping mall which opened in 2002
