Clayton, Missouri is a small town in the Ozarks region of the U.S. state of Missouri. It is located in Clay County, about 25 miles (40 km) east of Springfield and 30 miles (48 km) west of Kansas City. The population was 6,564 at the 2010 census. The town's name is derived from nearby Clayton Hills Cemetery which served as its namesake until it was moved to its present location in 1907. The first post office in Clayton was established on December 12, 1814 by Amos Kendall with the name "Tillotson". The first settler in what is now Clayton was James Beech who arrived in 1817 from Virginia. There were only a few buildings erected until 1819 when an arsenal and store were built and named for General Andrew Johnson which served as the center of local trade for many years before being moved to Lebanon, Missouri in 1870. A new courthouse was also built that year; it burned down in 1916 but was rebuilt and re-opens today as part of the downtown area). Clayton has been primarily agricultural since its founding but has recently become known for its manufacturing activities such as textiles, plastics, meat products, paper products and other items.
