Clayton, Missouri is a small town located in the Ozarks region of Missouri. The population was 1,561 at the 2010 census. Clayton is part of the Springfield-based city of Springfield. As of the 2016 census, Clayton had an estimated population of 2,167. Clayton began as a hamlet on the east bank of the Osage River in 1814 by two brothers named Isaac and Abel Clayton. In 1835, Abraham Clayton donated land to be used for a public square and courthouse in Clay County. The first courthouse was built in 1840 and stood on what is now Main Street. In 1847, a post office was established at Clayville and remained operational until 1865 when it was moved to nearby Decatur. By 1850, there were three schools in Clay County: one school for children under six years old called "The Home School" operated by Mrs. John Witherspoon; one school for adults called "The Old Academy" operated by Mr. John Hofer; and one school for mechanics called "The Mechanics Institute" operated by Messrs. Levi Coffin and Joseph Chamberlain (later Cline). In 1861, Union General Sterling Price invaded Missouri during the American Civil War seeking reinforcements for his army being assembled against Confederate General Robert Easley's Army of Northern Virginia at Manassas Junction near Petersburg VA Price's forces encountered Confederate General Stonewall Jackson's force which had been reinforced with 5500 men from Kentucky led by Major General James Longstreet When Price learned about this event he ordered his forces to retire but instead they fought off several charges against their opponents who retreated back into Tennessee Aftermath of battle saw over 1000 Union casualties with over 2000 Confederate losses including 500 dead or captured while also causing damage to many homes along with $10 million worth of property damage Aftermath of battle also left behind two main roads leading northward out of Richmond VA which became known as Battle Road(s) after that day’s action

In 1861, the Union Army burned Clayton churches and mills, which destroyed most of the town's economic development. After the Civil War, Clayton grew rapidly as an agricultural center. However, in the 1920s and 1930s it experienced significant social unrest as a result of its racial segregation policies.
