Clayton is a city in St. Francois County, Missouri, United States. The population was 11,024 at the 2010 census. Clayton is the county seat of St. Francois County and home to the Missouri State Capitol. The original village of Clayton was located on the east side of town, now part of downtown Clayton. The first organized military unit in present-day Missouri was Company A, 2nd Regiment Kansas Volunteer Infantry, which served in the Mexican–American War (1846). It became Company B 1st Regiment Kansas Volunteer Infantry on October 15, 1847 when it amalgamated with other companies from two other towns in St. Francois County to form the nucleus of what would become Company A 3rd Regiment Missouri Volunteers (1st Brigade) on February 23, 1849 at Springfield under command of Colonel John Sibley Hennepin. In 1861 as part of Confederate forces fighting for secession from the Union General James Ewing ordered all volunteer units within his Confederate state into battle including Companies B and A 3rd Regiment Missouri Volunteers under command of Major General Sterling Price to attack Fort Donelson opposite Nashville Tennessee while Union troops were besieging that same fortress under general Ulysses S Grant who had taken over command after Ewing's death. On April 12th Lieutenant Colonel Augustus Waddell led a detachment unsupported by others downriver from Corinth Illinois against Federal forces entrenched around Missionary Ridge near Chattanooga Tennessee where they encountered unexpected resistance and withdrew without achieving their objective due to lack of support coming up river which gave Grant control over much eastern Tennessee thus sparing Chattanooga from capture while fortifying nearby Knoxville giving Union soldiers an easy target for artillery fire which caused great loss among them during this engagement known as "The Battle Of Missionary Ridge". In 1865 Captain George Ransom's company C 4th Arkansas Cavalry attacking Confederate lines northeast Of Tupelo Mississippi achieved success against numerically superior force resulting in severe casualties for both sides before withdrawing without achieving their objectives due to heavy losses putting an end to that particular Confederate campaign despite large numbers being engaged On July 13th 1863 Captain James Tipton's company K 9th Kentucky Infantry attacked Confederate position between Resaca Alabama and Memphis TN resulting in decisive victory driving off all hostile opposition with little loss except for one man killed during this engagement also known as "Resaca" or "Halt Hill". This particular engagement helped initiate what would be called "The Civil War Offensive" by Robert E Lee resulting in major victories at later battles such as Second Bull Run (July 21), Antietam (September 17), Chancellorsville (October 19) and Gettysburg (November 14). After each battle significant numbers surrendered rather than fight another round or individual soldier did not survive providing effective attrition/discipline key to Lee's success throughout these engagements

Clayton, Missouri is a small town in the Ozarks region of west-central Missouri. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. The community is named for General James K. Polk who served as president of the United States from 1845 to 1849 and as governor of Missouri from 1850 to 1855. The first settler in Clayton was James Maynard, who arrived in1836. A post office called Clayton was established in 1840, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1906. In 1853, John Matson founded a sawmill on the bluffs above the community. By 1860, there were five settlements in Clayton: Maynard's Landing (later renamed Manchester), Easton, Springdale, Westfestoon and White Sands. There were also several mills associated with Clayton during this time: the Maynard & Hutton Saw Mill (), Jupiter Saw Mill (), McCoy’s Mills () and White Sands Wheel Factory (). Most of what is now Clayton was annexed by Springfield after that city became an important center for commerce and education in central Missouri during the mid-19th century. However, some of Clayton's original residents – including James Maynard – retained their homes until they died or moved away around 1880 or 1920.. On July 15, 1907, Governor John Pendergast created centralized government withinMO under what later became known as the Kansas City District Office System (). It included all of present day MO excepting Springfield which continued to be part of Springfield Township。 On November 13th 1907 Centralia Heights School District No 9 received approval from MO State Board Of Education to merge with Clayton Township pursuant to MTO § 104–1 et seq.. This gaverise to the name "Clayton" which has been used continuously since then by both local businesses and school districts located within its borders. In 1938 a new high school building replaced an older one that had been destroyed by fire three years earlier. The old high school had been built before MO statehood and catered primarily to eastern Shawnee County students while new schools were built closer to major cities such as St Louis and Kansas City; however when ink began flowing back into east Mojo following World War II most easternMojo students left for better opportunities outside the state due largely to prohibitionism combined with interracial tension brought about by African American migration into whitespace starting around 1915 onward…. Clayton, Missouri is a small town located in the Mid-America region of the United States. It was founded by two brothers in 1853, and has since grown to be a major center for agriculture and industry. Clayton also boasts some of the most impressive architecture and engineering feats in Missouri. The town's buildings are testament to its importance as a center of commerce and culture, as well as its history. The first settlers to Clayton were two brothers, John and Jesse Dixon. They arrived from Illinois in 1853, and began farming the land that would eventually become Clayton. The Dixon brothers had come across an area of land that had been abandoned by its previous owners, who had died out or moved away. The brothers decided to settle their land on the banks of the James River, just north of present-day Springfield Township. The early years of Clayton were difficult; the soil was tough but lackable for farming due to its depth and sandiness. However, through hard work and determination, the Dixon Brothers built up a successful farmstead. In addition to their crops, they raised livestock and manufactured goods from local materials such as hay and straw. This early success led to increased business opportunities for the Dixon Brothers; they soon became known as one of Missouri's leading farmers." Clayton quickly grew into a major agricultural center during this time period; it was home to several large businesses including Wabash Creameries (now PepsiCo), American Can Company (now Alexander Graham Bell), Stearns & Co., Whirlpool Corporation (later GEICO), Gulf Oil Corporation (later ExxonMobil), Atlas Copco Company (later Afloat) – all based in or around what is now downtown Clayton today." In 1868, John Dixon died suddenly at age 49 while farming near what is now Mount Vernon; his brother Jesse took over his farmstead and continued developing it into one of America's most successful agriculturally based towns." In 1902–1903,[1] Claytons industrial district underwent significant development thanks to an entrepreneur named Smedley Butler.[2] Butler purchased nearly 2 square miles along I-435 southbound between Ottawa Rd./Upper Arlington Rd./I-44/Maryville Rd./Kansas City Southern RR tracks eastbound from Independence Ave./Lenexa Blvd./ Kansas City Southern RR tracks westbound from Kansas City Southern RR tracks[3] for $4 million dollars[4]: this area would later be called "Butlertown".[5][6][7][8][9] At that point in time Claytons economy relied heavily on manufacturing: many industries included artillery manufacture[10], leather production [11], food processing [12], papermaking [13], mining [14], printing [15], transportation services [16] – all within walking distance or available via public transportation." Clayton was founded in 1827 as a small trading post on the confluence of the Missouri and Mississippi Rivers. The town grew rapidly during the 1830s, and by 1840 it had a population of 1,200. Clayton prospered as an agricultural center, shipping goods both upstream and downstream to points east. In 1851, the town passed under U.S. military jurisdiction following the Kansas-Nebraska Act, which granted free land to settlers in Nebraska. The military garrison declined in popularity after this event, and by 1865 Clayton had only 100 residents remaining. It remained relatively inactive until 1881 when it became the capital of western Missouri due to its location on Union Pacific Railroad tracks.
