Clayton, Missouri is a small town located in St. Francois County, Missouri. It was founded by the Jackson family in 1836. The first post office was established in 1838. In 1861, the Union army invaded St. Francois County and skirmished with local militias at a park near present-day Clayton. A group of Union soldiers decided to gift a horse to one of the militia members who had bravely fought against them. This event is generally considered to be the beginning of the Clayton military community and its tradition of giving gifts to its citizens. The city's first store opened its doors in 1865 and it quickly became an important stop for goods arriving from rural areas across St. Francois County. By 1870, Clayton had become an important center for trade and commerce in southwestern Missouri. The city's population soared as businesses began to open up around what is now downtown Clayton – including a grocery store, millinery shop, railway station, blacksmith shop and more! Clayton's growth continued into the 20th century as people commute into larger cities for work orstudy outside of their hometowns during World War II (1939-1945). Clayton, Missouri is a small town in the Ozarks of central Missouri. It is located on the east bank of the Arkansas River, about 20 miles (32 km) northeast of Springfield and 20 miles (32 km) south of Cedar Rapids. The population was 2,826 at the 2010 census. The first settler in Clayton was J.F. Price who arrived in 1836. A post office was established there in 1838, and by 1846 it had grown to include a few shops and a storehouse used as a hotel. In 1861, a sawmill and gristmill were erected near the present site of Clayton High School; these mills became important local sources of income until they closed in the early 1920s. The area that now comprises Clayton has been settled by Native Americans for many years before Europeans arrived. The Mississippian culture builder cultures are most well-known from villages such as Cahokia which stood along major rivers throughout much of North America during this time period. After European exploration began during the 1800s, traders and travelers traveled through what is now Clayton region looking for new land to purchase or explore. This led to development among early settlers including fur trappers and white hunters who hunted game along the river bottoms where cotton could be grown successfully; these men also built trading posts servicing trade routes between Great Britain and Northwest Africa via Memphis, Tennessee and Cairo, Illinois.. In 1840 settlers founded Poteau City about 12 miles (19 km) northwest of Clayton on an armorial road leading northeast from Springfield towards St Joseph County; this move followed earlier efforts by several pioneers to find land northward from Springfield on both banks of the Arkansas River which would form what is now known as Kansas State University’s campus today.. Moses Chamberlain came to Claytown about 1840 with his family from New York City following American independence; he purchased 640 acres (250 ha) around present day downtown Clayton from David Denton for $5 per acre ($140/ha). As part of his agreement with Denton, Chamberlain agreed not to sell any additional land within 5 miles (8 km) of either town center without first seeking approval from Denton.. Denton moved his family into Claytown circa 1850 when he acquired 602 acres (240 ha) east side OF downtown for $15 per acre ($265/ha). He sold 1/4 mile west side along US 65 for $10 per acre ($160/ha). This initial striping served as boundary between Claytown AND Poteau City until1872 when platting occurred across grid lines using surveyor’s stakes..

Clayton was founded in 1824 by Captain James Clayton and his wife, Nancy. The town grew rapidly, and by 1830 it had a population of over 200 people. In 1832, the Clayton family donated land to the city for a public square, which remains today known as "Clayton Square." The city built a courthouse and jail in 1835, and in 1856 it approved the first city charter. The population of Clayton slowly dwindled during the 1840s and 1850s due to Yellow Fever epidemics and other causes. However, by 1860, the town had recovered sufficiently to be included in the Missouri River Navigation Company's system of shipping goods from St. Louis to Kansas City. By 1870, however, Claytons population had decreased again due to increasing competition from Kansas City's growing industry. In 1873, however, the United States Congress passed an act designating Clayton as an " inner city" of St. Louis because of its high concentration of African Americans in one area compared to other sections of town. This led to more African American residents moving into Claytons core business district around Main Street between Jackson Avenue and Fourth Street; this became known as "The Black Metropolis."
