Chesterfield is a small town located in Daviess County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,828 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield, MO Metropolitan Statistical Area. Chesterfield was founded in 1827 and named for General James Chesterfield, who had led the British army during the American Revolution. The original furnace and mills were destroyed by a fire in 1851 but were rebuilt and continued to produce goods until 1954. A new mill was built in 1957 and became one of the largest employers in Chesterfield. In 2000, an insurance company bought all of the assets of Wabash Coal Company which left Chesterfield with very little economic activity other than Heartland Bank Plaza where some retail businesses operate as check cashing shops or convenience stores. The mill closed its doors for good on July 1, 2002 due to financial difficulties; however, it reopened as a museum on October 12th under new ownership with restoration work ongoing.

Chesterfield is a town in St. Francois County, Missouri, United States. The population was 2,824 at the 2010 census. Chesterfield is located on the east bank of the Kansas River. The first settlers in what would become Chesterfield were David and Karen Smith who arrived in 1839. Their land was donated by General John Ewing to start a new township. The township was named for General Edward Moseley Chesterfield who had served as governor of Illinois during the American Civil War and also as military commander of West Point from 1861-1865; he also donated much of his estate to be used for this purpose. In 1854, James Fenton set up a farmstead on land that now forms part of the eastern edge of Chesterfield Township. That same year, Samuel Maynard settled near the present day town limits and opened a store in what is now known as Maynard's Mill Road. In 1860, George Witherspoon bought some land northwest of present-day town limits from James Fenton and started a gristmill which still stands today; it became one of the most important businesses in town until it closed its doors in 1969 due to economic difficulties. In 1872, Isaac Searles established an iron foundry just northeast of present-day town limits; it continued producing iron products until 1967 when it merged with another company to form Eisenberger Industries Inc.; however, production continued at Searles' Foundry until 1984 when all operations ceased because of health concerns related to lead exposure from ore extractions). In 1903, John Ladd moved his family from Illinois to Chesterfield where they began keeping a grocery store called "The Ladd grocery." It operated until 1926 when it went out of business due to competition from larger stores opening up around town (the largest being J&J Grocery Co., which opened up next door in 1926). In 1931, veteran businessman Sam Chilton opened up his own grocery store called "Chilton's" across the street from "The Ladd grocery." This store lasted until 1978 when it too closed down due to competition from other retailers withintowns like Safeway and Kroger (it reopened in 1984 under new ownership but eventually closed again in 2002).

The town grew rapidly and soon had a population of over 100 people. By 1840, Chesterfield had become one of the largest towns in the state of Missouri. In 1849, Chesterfield became the capital of Missouri and saw some major changes during its time as the capital. In 1851, the legislature moved from Vandalia to Chesterfield and this change caused great growth in the town. By 1860, Chesterfield had reached its peak with a population of over 1,500 people. However, due to increasing disease rates in Illinois, many residents decided to move away from Missouri and into Illinois.
