The Chesterfield National Guard was organized on July 15, 1861. The unit was first called the "Chesterfield Volunteer Infantry" and then the "Missouri State Militia". The unit was originally composed of men from Chesterfield, Missouri. On October 6, 1861, the National Guard detachment in Fergusonville was mobilized and it became known as the "Fergusonville National Guard." In November 1861, the national guard detachment at Poplar Bluff had to be disbanded because of a lack of volunteers. A month later, on December 12th, 1861, the National Guard detachment at Lawrencesburg was also disbanded because there were not enough volunteers to make up for its loss. On January 6th 1862, a new national guard detachment organization was formed at Chesterfield with men from Johnson City. This detachment became known as the "Johnson City Guards". In February 1862, a new national guard detachment organization was formed at Lebanon with men from Ettrick Township. This detachment became known as the "Lebanon Guards". In April 1862, a new national guard detachment organization was formed at Mount Vernon with men from Murphysboro Township. This detachments become known asthe "Mount Vernon Guards". In May 1862, another new national guard detachment organization was formed at Greendale with men from Ouray County. This detachments becomeknown asthe"Ouray Guards". On June 5th 1862 a third new national guard detachedion organizationwasformedat Raytown withmenfrom Georgetown County .This Detachmentbecameknownasthe"Raytown Guards". In September 1862 an additionalnationalguarddetachmentOrganizationwasformedat Bellefontainewithmenfrom Chanute County .ThisDetachmentbecameknownasthe"Bellefontaine guards."
