Chesterfield is a city in Chesterfield County, Missouri, United States. The population was 9,848 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Chesterfield County. Chesterfield was founded by John Chester in 1812 and named for him. The first post office was established in 1814. Chesterfields were laid out by Nicholas Biddle in 1835 and platted in 1839. A railroad station was built there in 1870 and served as the town's main center until it closed down in 1984. The community has experienced various stages of growth over the years; from being a small village to becoming a town with a population of over 10,000 people by 1990. Development took hold during the late 20th century when schools became available and new businesses sprouted up around the train depot on State Street which still serves as a major commercial district today. In recent years, many new homes have been erected along Interstate 44 near Interstate 630 which provides easy access to all that Chesterfield has to offer including shopping malls, restaurants, theaters and hotels. Chesterfield, Missouri is a small town located in central Missouri. The population was 910 at the 2000 census. Chesterfield is part of the Jackson County, Missouri Micropolitan Statistical Area. The earliest settler in Chesterfield was Abraham Ivey who came to the area in 1827. In 1830, Nathaniel Pogue and his family moved from Illinois to what is now Chesterfield and began farming. The first store in Chesterfield was built by Solomon Price in 1848. A post office called Chesterfield was established in 1852, and remained in operation until 1901. In 1907, the city of Springfield merged with Jackson County to form a new local government which included Chesterfield within its boundaries. The merger created an economic crossroads as both cities were home to heavy industry such as aluminum production and meatpacking plants respectively. The city limits of Springfield expanded eastward over time including much of what are now rural areas of eastern Jackson County (including parts of present-day Chesterfield) while keeping much of the downtown district within their limits unchanged; this land would later become known as East Township. A cotton gin opened at Westport Landing on the Arkansas River in 1909 and became one of the largest cotton gins west of Memphis; it continued operations until 1942 when it closed due to World War II shortages of resources necessary for cotton production. In 1951, Interstate 35 intersected with US 66 just south of town making it possible for motorists traveling east or west off I-35 to pass through town without entering it; this made routing around town much easier for businesses that needed access to two major highways). In 1954, General Motors Corporation began producing cars here under their EVO brand name before moving production elsewhere shortly thereafter; since then many other large companies have produced vehicles here including Ford Motor Company (1957), Chrysler (1960), Pixar Animation Studios (1966), Volkswagen Group GmbH & Co., KGaA (1976) and Monsanto Company LLC (1998). In 2002, Cheshire Power Plant shut down due to fuel prices increasing above $1 per barrel which prompted protests from residents/ community groups throughout northeast Missouri against increased energy costs across all levels including state government control over utilities like Cheshire Power Plant
Chesterfield is located in the Eastern Missouri River Valley and was founded by the Chesterfield Purchase in 1821. The town was named for General Sir Henry Dearborn, who purchased the land from the Osage Nation. The first school in town was built in 1825. In 1840, a sawmill was built and began to produce lumber. In 1865, an agricultural center was developed and a post office was established. A train depot operated from 1870 to 1880. The mill closed in 1902 and the town became a ghost town until it reopened as Chesterfield-Morenci Municipal Airport in 2002.
