Chesterfield was founded in 1815 by Daniel Chesterfield and his wife Esther. It is the oldest town in Missouri and the only one still existing within the state of Missouri. It is located just south of St Louis, Missouri on the edge of a valley that once was part of what is now Kansas City, Missouri. The city proper was only established in 1867, when it became a military post on the border between Missouri and Illinois. According to one source, as early as 1785, there were two settlements in this area: Chesterfield and Covington. However, it wasn’t until 1815 that Daniel Chesterfield decided to establish his own town here. After learning about Indian hostilities along the Raccoon River, he built a stockade around his home which served as a base for trade with both Indians and settlers. In 1816 he married Esther (née French). By 1840 Chesterfield had become an important center for grain production due to its location near major riverside tributaries such as the Allegheny and Des Moines Rivers. The city’s population peaked at 30,000 in 1860 but declined thereafter until it reached its current level of 10,000 during 1970-2010. For many years Chesterfield functioned as a small village situated alongthe main street running through town center flanked by small shops on either side of this artery. Nowadays you will find most businesses concentrated around two large square blocks east-west off Main Street between 4th and 5th Streets – these are known locally as Downtown or OldTown because they were built before World War II when industry moved out westward into new suburbs like Schaumburg IL etc etc
