Carthage, Missouri is a small town in the Ozarks of south-central Missouri. It is located at 38°21′41″N 95°54′51″W, about 20 miles (32 km) east of Springfield and 15 miles (24 km) west of St. Louis. The population was 5,691 as of the 2010 census. The community was founded by two brothers in 1835, John and Eli Martin. The first store opened in 1836 on the site now occupied by Carthage Elementary School. In 1840, Carthage became the county seat of Platte County. A courthouse and jail were built in 1847 and1849 respectively; both have been removed to make way for new buildings on Park Drive today. In 1858, Carthage became an independent city with a Mayor/Council system similar to that now used in Missouri City and Independence. After several years of struggles with wrangling local taxes from farmers and others who situated their homes near Carthage's central business district, Carthage finally attained municipal independence in 1865 under Mayor Elisha Blythe Smiths administration. That year also saw the construction of what is still known as Smith Municipal Airport – then one of the smallest airports within Missouri City limits – on land currently occupied by Union High School’s football stadium! The airport served as a base for many years during which Carthage boasted one or more passenger jets per week operations from its large commercial center just north of town! Today there are only a few businesses remaining downtown although much has been done to improve pedestrian access including new sidewalks around all four corners of Park Drive since it was dedicated as such in 2006! Carthage, Missouri is a town in St. Francois County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,569 at the 2010 census. Carthage was founded by the French in 1795 and named for the city of Carthage in Tunisia. The first store in Carthage opened on Main Street on July 1, 1834. The town's first post office was opened on May 12, 1840. The original town square was located east of present-day Highway Fenton Road and north of what is now US Route 278. In 1847, the Hannibal & Pacific Railroad reached Carthage from Hannibal and ran along present-day US Route 278 between Carthage and Springfield. This allowed for more trade between Carthage and Springfield than had been possible earlier through Indian trails or stagecoaches. In 1850, the Hannibal & Pacific Railroad became part of the Omaha Railway system when that company merged with the Chicago Great Western Railway. In 1858, a large fire destroyed most of downtown Carthage except for a few buildings near Main Street which were rebuilt as a cotton gin and grist mill complex known as "The Cotton Palace". A new courthouse was built northeast of downtown in 1862 using funds raised by an auction held to raise money for tornado relief efforts after an EF3 tornado struck Memphis on October 24 that year killed over 100 people including many prominent citizens such as Andrew Johnson After Reconstruction ended in 1865 following Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation all former slaveholding states were required to allow freedmen to attend public schools without having their freedom bought or sold like horses or cows had been required before Union victory over Confederate forces two years earlier
