The first European explorers to reach what is now Carthage were French traders and missionaries who traveled through the area in 1763–64 and found ethnic Native Americans living on the riverbanks and near present-day downtown Carthage. In 1795, General Anthony Wayne's army sacked the city after a three-month siege during his pursuit of Francis Scott Key's British forces from Yorktown during their Expedition of 1813. The first post office was established in 1812; it was discontinued in 1827 because there was no mail service between Carthage and St. Louis until 1837. After being laid out as a town by act of legislature on December 22, 1839, Carthage became an incorporated village on February 14, 1840 under new regulations approved by the general assembly that createdSt. Clair County.
