Carthage is an unassuming town in Jackson County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,636 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Kansas City metropolitan area. The town was laid out in 1825 by Nicholas Gibbs and named for Carthage in Tunisia. The first store in Carthage opened its doors on Main Street in 1829. A post office was established at Carthage in 1830, and a school was built there in 1835. In 1840, Wm. Hays donated land to the town for a public square and plat of streets. In 1848, the Hannibal & Corinth Railroad arrived through Carthage and started construction of a line from Hannibal to Topeka Junction west of Carthage. By 1850, the railroad had reached Carthage and began operations; it remains operational today as I-435 (the Hannibal-Topeka Highway). In 1861, Confederate forces under General Simon Bolivar invaded Missouri during the American Civil War; after driving Union troops out of Cairo Township north of town, they advanced into what is now Jackson County via what is now Main Street to approach Carthage from the south side; but were repelled by Union forces under General John Bleecker who fortified his house on Church Hill (now known as Old Blacksmiths Hill) which overlooked downtown Carthagena resulting in a strategic victory for Bolivar over Hays’ plan - this event is commemorated with a small plaque located atop Church Hill that reads "Bleecker's Defeat". After the war ended and slavery was abolished across all America, many African Americans migrated to Missouri looking for new opportunities; however, not all did so successfully given that racism still existed throughout much of America including Missouri where blacks were still considered inferior to whites even after slavery had been abolished statewide. Some black residents decided to stay behind while others moved on but most within three years or less following emancipation such that by 1880 only one percent (of total Africatown residents) remained living within city limits – largely because land prices had become prohibitively high following Reconstruction.]] This Reality soon clashed with aspirations expressed by those who relocated: primarily merchants seekingartisanal production jobs skilled labor became dominant over entrepreneurs wanting more efficient transportation access.,] So too did white flight as businesses closed due mainly to competition from newly open factories run by African Americans outside of town.;["It wasn't until well into the 20th century that developers finally gentrified districts like Africatowns margins']] As previously mentioned Africatowns boundaries quickly changed due largelyto white flight following reconstruction.:["It wasn't until well into the 20th century that developers finally gentrified districts like Africatowns margins']
