Cape Girardeau, Missouri is a town in Cape Girardeau County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the St. Louis metropolitan area. The first European to visit what is now Cape Girardeau was Father Jacques Marquette on July 6, 1795. He named the current site of Cape Girardeau "Ojibwe country" after his people who lived there before him. The first white settler in the area was James Kapp from Michigan Territory in 1836 and he began naming businesses and streets in honor of European settlers and their families that had preceded them such as John Fenton's Store and Isaac Davenport's House. In 1837, Kapp sold his land east of present-day Market Street to George Armstrong Custer for $4 per acre which led to the founding of Custerville by him and other early settlers. In 1854, Abraham Lincoln visited Cape Girardeau while campaigning for president and designated it as the county seat of Cape Girardeau County under Illinois law then still in effect; this designation never changed until 1898 when it was moved to St. Louis due to state government control over county seats following Kansas Statehood. A post office called Prairie du Chien was established in 1839 but did not open until 1840; it closed due to postal reformer Edwin Marsh's efforts to improve mail service between Great Lakes states without success. In 1855, capegirardaceoua Post Office opened with Wm Hays serving as its firstmaster; it continued operation until 1906 when it was replaced by the present-day post office name of Cape Girardeai
