Cape Girardeau, Missouri is a city in the U.S. state of Missouri. The population was 25,902 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cape Girardeau-Jackson County metropolitan area, which has a population of over 60,000. The city was founded in 1835 as a fur trader's post on the Rochebruce River by Nicholas Atherton and other pioneers from Canada. The first post office in Cape Girardeau was established in 1836 by Captain John Sharp and James Gentry; it served until 1851. In 1867, Cape Girardeau became an incorporated town when the territorial legislature passed an act incorporating twenty-six townships in Jackson County without having first given consideration to cape girardeaus for inclusion. In 1870, another act changed the name of the township to Cape Girardeau after General Andrew Johnson's visit to that area that year and its successful prosecution as a military outpost against Confederate forces during the American Civil War. In 1927, Prairie View A&M University (now Prairie View University System) moved from Dallas, Texas to Van Buren Township and began instruction at what is now Brookings Stadium on East State Street near downtown Cape Girardeau. The university continued operations through annexation by Saint Louis Polytechnic Institute (SLPI), which took over operation of Prairie View during World War II before merged with SLPI proper in 1948 to form St Louis State University; thereafter, Prairie View operated as an independent institution until it merged with SLPI once again in 2002 to become Saint Louis Area Universities Integration Authority (SLAUIA). During most of this time—from 1927 until 1962—Prairie View had no resident students because all instruction was offered online through satellite links from Saint Louis Polytechnic Institute’s main campus located about thirty miles away at Ferguson–Stirrup College outside St Joseph MO (before merger with SLPI). In 1962–1963 SLAUIA created both Lamar Community College District No 1 and Benton Community College District No 2 as alternative structures for Prairie View while also expanding its instructional offerings beyond engineering and arts courses into business administration/administrative law/law enforcement/marketing/medical technology/psychology/social work; these new institutions were eventually closed down due to budget cuts shortly after they opened but continue to be known locally simply as “Prairieview” institutions today despite no connection whatsoever between those campuses and any original prairieside location within present-day Cape Girardeai
