After she died, Fenton buried her beneath deck so that she could always be with himinline with other members of crewmates who had passed away since she did so. Cape Girardeau, Missouri is a city in the US state of Missouri. The population was 12,812 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Cape Girardeau County. The current mayor is David Rittleman. Cape Girardeau was founded on February 17, 1837 by Daniel Boone and his party as a trading post on the confluence of the White River and Missouri River. On November 1, 1841, it became an incorporated town with a population of 3,000 under the name "Cape Girardeau". On April 14, 1847, it became part of St. Louis County when that county was created from parts of Warren and Platte Counties. Cape Girardeau's first municipal building was built in 1847 at Third and Broadway Streets in what is now downtown. In 1865 it merged with other local towns to form the city of Cape Girardeau which had a population of 20,000 by 1870. On January 1st 1860, a fire destroyed most of downtown Cape Girardeau; however much remains today including the original City Hall (now known as Mayor's Office Building). The cornerstone for this building was laid on October 15th 1865 by Mayor John Cavanaugh who also served as first clerk-treasurer and first tax assessor for this new municipality. The present City Hall replaced an earlier structure which burned down on December 7th1863 during an attempted arson campaign targeting businesses near Fort Laramie while military troops were stationed there temporarily
