Cape Girardeau, Missouri is a small town located in the Ozarks region of Missouri. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cape Girardeau-Jefferson County, MO Metropolitan Statistical Area. The area that now includes Cape Girardeau originated as an Indian village on the site of present-day Cape Girardeau. The first white settler in what is now Cape Girardeau was James Hallett, who arrived in 1819 and named his new land "Hallett's Landing." In 1834, General David Hunter sold 563 acres to John Pemberton for $3,000. Pemberton named his new community "Cape Girardeau" after his birthplace in France—the capital of that country at the time. In 1836, Major John Smith founded a permanent settlement around Fort Smith and called it "Smith's Depot." That year also saw the arrival of Drury Lane School (now Prairie View A&M University), which became one of the largest schools in Cape Girardeau County. By 1840, however, Smith's Station had been abandoned and most of what remain today were developed as farmland surrounding Fort Smith. In 1851–52 Wabash Railroad completed its line from Saint Louis to Cairo via Cape Girardeai; this made Cape Girardaou an important rail junction for transportation between St Louis and Hannibal,MO., making it one of the few places in America where goods could be hauled southward by railroad before being shipped off to Europe or North America. In 1865–66 Union troops occupied nearby Mound City during their invasion of Missouri; as a result muchof what remains today about Mound City are remnants of Union military fortifications built during this time period. By 1900 there were just under 10 residents living in cape girardaou; by 1910 that number had increased to over 20 thanks largely to growth within neighboring Jefferson County due to waves of farming immigrants from Russia and other parts of Eastern Europe during that decade. During World War I (1914–18), many local farmers served in various units including those occupying Newtonia Heights near Rolla; these men later formed the nucleus for Operation Crossroads which aimedto supply food supplies needed by American forces fighting on both sides of war effort). Cape Girardeau, Missouri is a town in Cape Girardeau County, Missouri, United States. The population was 4,436 at the 2010 census. The name means " cape of the giraffes" in French. The town was founded in 1857 by James Hargrave and his brother-in-law John Purdy. It was named for General David Porter (1768-1848), who fought in the Mexican–American War and also served as a U.S. military Governor of Florida. In 1861, Confederate General Robert Ewell arrived in Cape Girardeau to help lead an attack on Union forces under General George Buell south of Cape Girardeau River. When Buell learned about this attack he ordered his troops to march north to meet Ewell at Clarksville instead. As they neared the river they were met by Union cavalry under Colonel Nathaniel Lyon who drove them back across the river into Illinois territory. This action helped inspire Confederate soldiers to fight against Union forces throughout the war and helped contribute to Lincoln's victory over Rebel leader Jefferson Davis at Appomattox Court House four years later. Aftermath of the Civil War saw many changes take place in Cape Girardeau including the departure of most residents during Reconstruction led by Mayor Loring Wesson followed by Mayor John Fenton from 1895 until his death in 1928.
